Want to emphasize your cheekbones and achieve a more slender facial appearance without piling on contouring products? Simply master these four highlighter techniques to visually slim down your face.
If you scroll through Instagram, you've likely noticed one of the biggest beauty trends of recent years: luminous, radiant skin. This look can be achieved through the strobing technique, which also creates the illusion of a slimmer face. No need for an arsenal of cosmetics—just a highlighter (or luminizer). Unlike contouring, strobing is a perfect way to maintain a natural skin finish while subtly reshaping the face.
But how do you apply highlighter to make your face look more sculpted and slender without ending up looking greasy? Here are the top tips.
Use the correct highlighter
This advice may seem obvious, but the real trick is to apply highlighter only to the areas where light naturally hits when you turn your face. Many assume any highlighter will do—but that's not true. Products packed with large glittery particles or those with a holographic or metallic finish won't work well. They may look dramatic under artificial light (like flash photography) but appear unnatural in daylight. For a natural, dewy look that contours the face, opt for a highlighter with fine shimmering microparticles that give a subtle, healthy glow. The goal is skin that looks hydrated and luminous.
Where you apply it matters too. You don't need contouring products to slim the face if you place your highlighter strategically. Simply dab it on the cheekbones, temples, above the eyebrows, and along the bridge of the nose. These highlighted areas will catch the light, preventing the face from looking flat or wide.
Color selection is key. You definitely don't want overly bright or dark streaks on your cheekbones. Pick a shade that matches your skin tone or is just a touch lighter. Feel free to experiment with gold, pink, rose gold, etc., but stay sensible: the product's depth should closely align with your natural complexion.
Blend well
Blending is crucial. The highlighter should seamlessly meld with your skin. Use a brush to lightly buff the product over the highlighted areas in circular motions, then soften the edges with a damp sponge using gentle patting. This technique diffuses any harsh lines, ensuring a flawless, natural finish.

Fix makeup only where needed
Rather than dusting powder all over, set your makeup only in specific spots: under the eyes, the sides of the nose, along the jawline, forehead, chin, and other areas where foundation tends to fade or where skin gets oily. The highlighter is placed on light-reflecting zones, which lets you sculpt the face without looking shiny or greasy.
After fixing, use a wet sponge
We've stressed the importance of blending, but as makeup artist Patrick Ta says, you can never blend too much. Once you've applied highlighter, powder, and all other products, take a damp sponge and gently press it over your entire face—including powdered areas. This step helps all the makeup melt into the skin rather than sitting on top like a thick mask. The result is healthier-looking skin, with the highlighter's face-sculpting effect appearing completely natural. No one will guess you've contoured, yet your face will appear slimmer with more defined cheekbones.
