A Stunning Collaboration with Michael Sampson!
Back in 2023, I found myself in New York City alongside Michael Sampson, the publisher behind Alithia Ramirez Was an Artist. (If you haven’t come across Michael yet, do yourself a favor and check him out—he’s truly remarkable!) As we strolled past stylish Manhattan boutiques, Michael shared a fashion-themed book concept he had been turning over in his mind for years. (We also enjoyed a meal at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, pictured below, which was an absolute blast.)
Being an incredibly considerate individual and a dedicated researcher, Michael knew some little-known details about my background, including my past work as a theatrical costume designer.
Right then, a partnership took shape.
Michael is not just talented and productive but also generous, allowing me to take his concept and turn it into verse. Crafting the illustrations for this ideal project was, without question, a joy! I’m deeply thankful to Michael and the outstanding team at Brown Books Publishing, steered by the brilliant publishing expert Milli Brown. Designer Danny did phenomenal work. He’s a typography wizard, making him my personal hero.
Book Tour
Michael and I are currently on the road promoting A MAKER OF DRESSES. Yesterday, we visited TLA (the Texas Library Association Convention) in Dallas—it was fantastic—and we’ll be making several stops across the US next week. Keep up with us on social media, and if you happen to be in Atlanta, Miami, Austin, or Wake Forest, I hope you’ll drop by and say hi!
