Elon Musk has raised concerns that we may be creating a real-life version of Skynet, likening the unchecked progress of artificial intelligence to summoning a demon from a horror movie—one that its creators believe they can control but inevitably cannot. In response to skeptics who argue such a scenario is a millennium away, Musk insists they are off by roughly 990 years, pointing out that military technology typically outpaces consumer electronics by 30 to 50 years.
Speaking at the AeroAstro Centennial Symposium to students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Musk discussed computer science, AI, space exploration, and the colonization of Mars. He declared AI the most serious threat to human survival, stating, "I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that. So we need to be very careful." He added, "I'm increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don't do something very foolish."
The tech entrepreneur—often compared to Marvel's Tony Stark—leads groundbreaking companies such as SpaceX, which holds the first private contracts from NASA to resupply the International Space Station, and Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer.
