Heading into Colombia for the first time, I had no real idea of what awaited me. For years, news reports had focused on the nation's troubled history, leaving me cautious about visiting. But in recent times, Colombia has turned a new page, and as peace settles in, tourism has blossomed. Millions now come to see the wonders of this remarkable South American country firsthand, and like me, they often find themselves taken aback. I was especially—and pleasantly—surprised by my days in the capital, Bogotá. Wandering the vivid streets of the oldest district, I kept noticing a common thread: the intense creativity that seems to pulse through nearly every resident. This is a city for art lovers and for those who express their inventiveness in countless other ways. During my stay, I encountered this beautiful creativity from many angles, but I truly connected with Bogotá's artistic spirit through these three experiences.
Graffiti Tour
In 2011, two graffiti and street artists decided to showcase the best of Bogotá's street art and elevate their craft as a legitimate form of artistic expression, not vandalism. Since then, these tours have grown, focusing largely on the trendy La Candelaria neighborhood, close to the historic center. Even more impressive: the tour is free, though tips are strongly encouraged—and from my experience, well deserved.
Led by the affable Carlos, those few hours ranked among the best walking tours I've ever taken. Street art in Bogotá goes beyond pretty pictures; for decades, important messages have been woven into the colorful images. They comment on the country's complex politics, the violence that once shook the capital, and the struggles between the rich, the poor, and Colombia's emerging middle class. This is very much a nation of haves and have-nots, and the powerful works created by local and international artists reflect those sometimes-difficult realities. But it's not all heavy themes—some pieces exist to complement the buildings they adorn or simply to add whimsy to the neighborhood. The key is to stop and truly look at each painting, searching for the meaning often hidden within. It adds a layer of complexity to the city that I honestly didn't expect.
Love of Food
Food is a vital part of travel nearly everywhere, but in Colombia it carries even deeper significance. To learn as much as possible about the culinary traditions of Bogotá—and Colombia as a whole—I booked a private food tour of the city. I discovered a lot about local food customs, from the many corn-based dishes and snacks to desserts that might seem unusual but are all delicious. Beyond that, there's a strong emphasis on fresh, local eating: visiting neighborhood or citywide markets and buying some of the freshest fruits and vegetables you'll ever see. Thanks to the country's unique range of climates, they produce fruits so exotic you'd think you were in Thailand. I couldn't name half the fruits I tasted, but every one was delicious. Add in the medium-roasted, full-bodied coffee that Colombia is famous for, and the food scene here is worth a trip all on its own.
Museums
Bogotá boasts many excellent museums, and several surprised me, including the renowned Gold Museum. But one in particular deserves extra attention and is an absolute must-see.
Though I was a bit skeptical at first, it didn't take long for me to fall completely in love with the Botero Museum. Even if the name isn't familiar, I'm sure you've seen some of the famous works by Colombian artist Fernando Botero—you know, the plump, oversized people and animals that look inflated. The Botero Museum is the beautiful home to many of his paintings and sculptures. In 2000, Botero donated these works along with his private art collection, creating the museum in La Candelaria. Free to the public, Botero wanted to share his art on his own terms. He still decides the layout and even the wall colors. But as I quickly learned, the building itself is just as stunning as the art it houses. Built in the 1720s, it was the colonial mansion of the Archbishop of Bogotá, one of the city's most powerful figures. Beautifully restored, you can easily imagine the lavish lifestyle once enjoyed here. As much as I loved the artwork, it was the building that truly won my heart. Bogotá is a city of intensely creative people, seen in literature, art, graffiti, and street performers. It's exciting, and this museum is surely one of the must-see spots in this enormous city.
Bogotá possesses a creative spirit that is genuinely rare. Sure, every city has museums and an artistic community, but the way creativity permeates daily life here is entirely unique. At every turn I encountered this quirky trait—whether in the many bookstores lining the small side streets or the pervasive street art throughout the city. Every resident contributes something to this rich tapestry of artistic expression, and for me, it became an essential part of my time in Bogotá.
