Spanning wildlife reserves to ocean shores, South Africa remains a top-tier destination in my book. So much so that I chose Cape Town as my home base for the past year while continuing my travels.
Craving city exploration, vineyard tours, or a real safari? This one-of-a-kind corner of Africa delivers on every front. The list of incredible experiences in South Africa is practically endless.
Eager to take it all in? Below you'll find the must-do activities along with a full two-week South Africa itinerary!
- Day 1-3: Cape Town
- Day 4-6: Safari
- Day 7-9: Cape Winelands
- Days 10-14: Options 1 or 2
- Fly into Cape Town International Airport
Plan to dedicate a minimum of three days to Cape Town. Kick things off with a helicopter ride along the city skyline and southwest coastline to set the mood for your journey.
Following that, spend a morning in my beloved Woodstock neighborhood browsing independent coffee shops and boutiques. Watch for the colorful murals scattered throughout the streets.
Right in Woodstock's core sits the iconic Old Biscuit Mill Market. Featuring daytime and evening markets, workshop areas, farm stands, gourmet eats, African pottery, and tons more, this spot is unmissable.
Tip: Once hunger kicks in, sample a classic South African braai (barbecue).
Bo-Kaap deserves a visit too. Once called the Malay Quarter, this area weaves together Malaysian, African, and Indian influences into something truly unique. Dive into its rich past on a guided walk, and sign up for a cooking session while you're there. The neighborhood masters fusion cuisine like no other.
Set aside a complete day to discover Cape Peninsula. Say hello to the penguins at Boulders Beach, then dedicate the rest of the day to hiking and soaking in spectacular scenery.
- Gondwana Game Reserve (Four-hour drive from Cape Town)
Gondwana Game Reserve ranks among the finest locations for spotting the Big 5 roaming free. Throughout the reserve, you'll encounter African lions, African elephants, African leopards, Cape buffalos, and rhinos.
- Kruger National Park (Three-hour flight from Cape Town)
Kruger National Park stands as one of Africa's biggest game reserves and a premier choice. Based on your safari lodging, expect to fly into Phalaborwa Airport, Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMI).
Choose from eco-friendly huts, high-end villas, or tented campsites. Among the Kruger properties I love are Royal Malewane and Lion Sands Game Reserve.
Should your route pass through Johannesburg, consider tacking on a day or two! South Africa's biggest city sits just forty minutes by train from Pretoria, making it essential for any traveler.
From the Apartheid Museum to the Botanical Garden to the Wits Art Museum, Johannesburg offers an incredibly varied lineup of activities.
- 45-minute drive from Cape Town
Hands down my favorite wine region globally, the Cape Winelands are paradise for wine enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. The climate stays pleasant throughout the year, and you'll find uncommon varietals and pairings at wallet-friendly prices.
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are dotted with lavish spas and stunning boutique properties. Plan to spend at least a couple of nights to experience the region's highlights.
(Option 1) The Garden Route Road Trip
- Hermanus, Swellendam, Knysna, Tsitsikamma National Park, Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth
Kick off your Garden Route adventure with a night in Hermanus—the go-to retreat for Capetonians seeking a break from city life. Book a room at One Marine Drive in Hermanus for a laid-back evening, then dedicate the following week to hitting standout stops along this celebrated route.
I haven't completed the entire Garden Route myself, though this blog post offers a solid Garden Route Road Trip Itinerary.
(Option 2) Durban and Rovos Rail
- Stay at the Oyster Box Hotel and Experience a Luxury Rail Journey
Rovos Rail sets the standard for upscale train travel across Africa. Don't take my word for it—Vogue agrees. Their journeys wind through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania, spanning three to fifteen days, so you can ride in elegance to bucket-list spots like Victoria Falls and Zanzibar.
Boasting gorgeous beaches and a distinctive Afro-Indian identity, Durban deserves plenty of your time. Wander the Golden Mile's shoreline, then head over to Florida Road for shopping and nightlife.
Spend at least one night at the five-star boutique hotel and spa, Oyster Box Hotel; it's a destination unto itself.
