What a grind those workdays can be! So many nerve cells are sacrificed in unequal struggles with superiors or negligent coworkers... Is it really worthwhile? Hardly, because persistent stress wreaks havoc on our health. And productivity certainly doesn't thrive under such conditions. In fact, we trap ourselves in a vicious cycle: anxiety over lack of progress leads to more errors.
How do we break free from this dependency? We consulted psychologists and gathered their insights on swiftly pulling yourself together to safeguard both your well-being and your professional standing.
Stay Calm: Techniques for Workplace Serenity
Deepen Your Breathing
Yogis long understood the power of deep breathing—it normalizes bodily processes and signals to the brain that all is well. When we are relaxed, we can better manage situations. As you breathe freely, ask yourself what you are actually feeling. Analyzing specific symptoms (headache, nausea, etc.) shifts focus from vague anxiety to concrete problem-solving. Yogis recommend inhaling deeply through the nose and exhaling slowly through the mouth. A few such cycles will bring you to a balanced state.
Anchor Yourself
What does a ship do when it needs to stop? It drops anchor! We'll do the same, in our own way. If possible, sit comfortably and grasp the armrest or edge of the table. If standing, feel the floor or ground beneath your feet. You can also clasp your hands together—literally 'pull yourself together.' This reminds you that you are safe, nothing terrible is happening, and everything can be resolved.
Take a Walk
If your boss isn't currently scolding you, take a stroll (it would be odd to turn around mid-reprimand 🙂). Breathe deeply, walk calmly along the hallway, and if possible, drink some water. This organizes your thoughts, and the movement helps release the adrenaline ready to burst inside you.
Mentally Disengage
Yes, sometimes you can drift away—briefly and in your mind. If the situation allows, distance yourself a little from an unpleasant conversation or a toxic individual. Imagine the most joyful moment of your life or a place where you felt wonderful. Just be careful not to smile blissfully in response to your boss's angry tirade! These simple techniques truly help maintain balance even in the toughest scenarios. But it's best to practice them while things are calm, so they become automatic when you need them most.
