Reminiscing

Driven by the creation of my forthcoming book chronicling my time on the road, I've been drifting through corridors of recollection, revisiting the past ten years of wandering.

I sift through photographs and diary pages from years past. I scroll Facebook hunting for faces I encountered long ago. Tales and acquaintances buried deep in my subconscious resurface as I question what became of them and how their lives unfolded.

Individuals whose journeys briefly converged with mine along life's endless highway.

The five fellow wanderers who planted the seed for my maiden voyage. The young woman from that Prague hostel who pulled me into her circle of friends when I was too timid to speak up. The Dutch companions I roamed alongside for weeks across Australia. The eclectic band I shared a month with in New Zealand. The mates I made during my Bangkok stint. The companions I collected during my American road journey. My inaugural Couchsurfing host. Or this wild bunch I hung out with for a month in tropical bliss:

As foreigners in an unfamiliar territory, we became each other's anchor. We forged inseparable bonds, became accomplices in mischief, and occasionally romantic partners.

Still, as we each march forward along our separate trajectories and glance backward, we watch one another's glow dim like a dying star, until eventually it vanishes, leaving only remnants behind.

Whatever became of the riders I thumbed rides with across Iceland?

Where did all those souls scatter to?

Where have the Valencian Spaniards I celebrated with in Florence ended up?

Whatever happened to Lennart, the Amsterdam poker buddy?

Is Jen, a German woman and my inaugural road romance, still calling Australia home?

Where did that American pair from Bocas del Toro wander off to, the ones whose contact details I neglected to note?

Where are those Thailand acquaintances who convinced me to abandon my career?

The companions I bunked alongside at that Taiwanese lodging?

I encountered these individuals in Thailand and later reunited with them in Bordeaux. I recall that flawless day — an excursion to the shore, twilight over a sandy ridge, followed by wine and cheese beneath the stars. But where have they vanished to? I haven't a clue.

Where have the innumerable strangers I shared moments, evenings, and brief intervals with in hostels scattered across the globe disappeared to? The ones who trekked through alien alleyways, celebrated until dawn, shared meals and chuckled alongside me?

What occupies their time now? Do they continue wandering? Did they complete their globe-spanning ambitions as they envisioned? Are they content? Wedded? Do they find fulfillment in their work? Are they thriving? Are they still breathing?

And do similar musings occupy their minds?

Do they contemplate the strangers they crossed paths with? Do they stumble upon an image on Facebook, settle back, and dissolve into reverie?

These fellows showed me I was laboring excessively during my journeys….and their names have escaped me entirely.

Is some person somewhere narrating that account of an unforgettable Prague evening and weaving me into the storyline?

Traversing your history resembles navigating an emotional battlefield — exhilaration, thrill, sorrow, remorse. Countless souls stir feelings of longing and curiosity within me. I'm aware it's naive to assume every acquaintance remains a permanent fixture. Souls enter, souls exit. Drifting apart is simply how existence operates. Individuals, circumstances, and eras transform. This holds true across every dimension of living.

Whatever became of these remarkable fellows??

Yet that awareness doesn't diminish my curiosity.

Our trajectories might never cross once more and recollections of them may dim (honestly, what was the surname of that Bocas duo?), yet the imprint they left upon my existence will endure eternally. They imparted lessons about releasing control, embracing mirth, opening my heart to affection, chasing bolder escapades, extending my boundaries, and countless other insights. My existence grew richer because they graced it.

Eventually, ages from now, I'll cast my gaze backward once more and discover additional lights have dimmed. I'll find myself questioning their destinations anew. And, akin to a temporal voyager, I'll rewind to the instants we shared, replay them within my consciousness, and conjure a joyful destiny for my companion where their every aspiration materialized as splendidly as mine have.

Perhaps they too stand gazing skyward, contemplating identical possibilities.

Perhaps they're recounting to their companion/beloved/offspring, "There was this occasion…", conjuring my image, and declaring, "That fellow was remarkable. I trust existence has been generous to him."

As we venture down our individual branches of this lengthy, meandering expedition, perhaps that's the loftiest aspiration one can genuinely harbor.
