Michelle Obama's 2018 memoir became a top seller, and her arena performances sold out completely. Yet her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, refuses to treat her like a celebrity.
The former first lady posted a conversation with her mom on Instagram this Wednesday, and the messages were remarkably candid. "I guess you were a hit at the Grammys," her mother began, referencing Obama's appearance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Obama had opened the ceremony alongside Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jennifer Lopez.
Then came the line "Love Rules" accompanied by a mention of Meghan Markle.
Obama asked her mother whether she had tuned in, as any typical daughter would when appearing on one of the year's most-watched broadcasts. Her mother replied: "I saw it because Gracie called me. Did you meet any of the real stars or did you leave right after it finished?"
The two exchanged remarks, with Obama insisting she had told her mother to watch, and her mother countering that she would have remembered if Obama had mentioned it (though she admits her memory is poor).
Eventually, Obama made a point of asserting her own celebrity status: "And I Am A real star….by the way…." she wrote. Her mother's response was a simple "Yeah." The sarcasm was palpable even through the screen.
