I don't know about you, but my skin in winter versus summer is completely different. Dry, pale, and lackluster are the best terms to describe my winter complexion, while the dewy, radiant look I have in summer suddenly requires extra effort. If, like me, you refuse to accept a tired appearance, putting in that additional work can transform your skin. So I decided to share some favorite tips, tricks, and products to restore that luminous glow.
Exfoliating the Body
The key to a flawless, even tan is starting with a smooth canvas. Exfoliation is crucial because it removes dead skin cells that tanning products can stick to, preventing uneven color. Additionally, exfoliating helps your tan last longer. Committing to this step is essential. I change my body scrubs often, but currently I'm loving LaLicious Extraordinary Whipped Sugar Scrub. It leaves my skin incredibly soft and smells amazing.
Exfoliating the Face
Exfoliating your face is just as vital as exfoliating your body, for identical reasons. My go-to products for facial exfoliation before tanning are Sisley Buff and Wash Facial Gel and James Read Tan Perfecting Enzyme Peel Mask. Combined, they effectively eliminate dead skin cells and leftover tan, leaving skin smooth and ready for tan application.
Applying Self-Tanner to the Body
I believe I've tested nearly every self-tanner available! Honestly! Some were total failures, others were decent, but I didn't fall in love until I discovered James Read self-tanners. They offer the best color—meaning the most natural-looking—without staining clothes or sheets, and they lack that typical tanning product odor. Application is straightforward: I use my hands, no brushes or gloves needed. I usually use James Read Sleep Mask Tan, but during winter when my skin is especially dry, I switch to James Read Coconut Melting Tanning Balm Face & Body.
Applying Self-Tanner to the Face
Again, I turn to James Read products. Beyond the benefits already mentioned, I appreciate that they don't cause breakouts. I used to avoid facial self-tanners because many clogged pores and led to acne, so I was thrilled to find ones that don't. I use James Read Sleep Mask Tan Face overnight and Tantour Sculpting Duo as my daily bronzer. This bronzer also works as a self-tanner! After a few days, I noticed a natural-looking contour appearing—ideal for makeup-free days. I apply the mask with my hands and the bronzer with an angled brush.
Adding Glow to the Body
I enjoy using a moisturizer that imparts a gentle radiance, making my skin appear more luminous. My current favorite is This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. I apply it to my legs and arms—though it's marketed for legs, it works well everywhere. It enhances my tan and gives my skin the dewy finish I adore. What sets it apart is that it produces a very subtle, inner glow—what I call 'post-vacation skin'—rather than a shimmery or shiny effect.
Adding Glow to the Face
For a glowing base, I begin with Sisley Instant Eclat Instant Glow Primer. It creates that 'inner radiance' look I love, and my foundation sits perfectly on top. As for highlighters, I have several favorites. I apply Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick Glistening Illuminator on my cheekbones, collarbone, and shoulder high points. It's a stunning highlight, and the compact design makes it easy to carry for quick touch-ups. My preferred powder highlighters are Edward Bess Meta Powder and Guerlain Météorites Pearls. I sometimes use them alone or to set a cream highlighter—layering cream and powder intensifies the glow.
