While traveling through Siberia, New Zealand photographer Amos Chapl stopped in Oymyakon, a village famously known as the Pole of Cold, with an absolute minimum temperature of -68°C.
His photographic series documents the everyday challenges residents face due to the harsh climate. Vehicles cannot be turned off (truck drivers operate for months without ever shutting down their engines), children are bundled so tightly they can barely move independently, fresh vitamins are absent from meals, and meat dominates the diet because cultivating grains or fruit is impossible. Capturing images was also challenging: the lens's focus and zoom rings occasionally froze solid, preventing any rotation.
