Amid the pandemic's pervasive uncertainty and stress, tending to one's own health and happiness became an essential practice. Experts predict that this year, many individuals will dive deeper into psychotherapy, bolster their physical fitness and immune systems, and pay closer attention to hormonal and sexual health. Here are the five leading wellness trends of 2021!
Embracing Self-Love and Personal Care

A notable shift toward self-love and self-care has emerged recently. The previous year taught us that dedicating time to recharge is crucial, and that valuing yourself is fundamental.
“Our bodies are the arbiters of safety, and when we feel unsafe in this world, or if our basic human needs are not being met, we start to break down – spiritually, emotionally, physically,” explains Latham Thomas, founder of the Mama Glow Wellness Platform. ─ “The only way to stay strong and move forward is to be aware of your vulnerabilities, to show yourself love, care and respect.”
Restorative sleep, genuine downtime, self-care routines, and spiritual practices are straightforward ways to reintroduce equilibrium and comfort into daily life. These habits not only yield positive results but also serve as powerful instruments for recovery and healing.
Digital Psychotherapy
Another trend shaping 2021 is focusing on mental health alongside physical health. Understanding and managing one's emotional state helps navigate stress and achieve harmony with the environment—a vital component of self-care.
Beyond meditation courses and mindfulness articles, digital psychotherapy is gaining traction: numerous counseling and therapy formats are now accessible remotely, within the safety of one's home. Consulting a psychologist via Skype instead of in-person meetings has become routine, experts in this field are increasingly followed on Instagram, and the number of online platforms for finding the right professional keeps growing.

Home Fitness

The next trend, carried over from last year into 2021, is online exercise. With lockdowns and the shift to remote work, many discovered that establishing a workout regimen at home is entirely feasible. Some maintained their routines by training with a personal coach via FaceTime, others opted for YouTube and even TikTok videos to stay in shape, and a new group embraced virtual group classes. Advances in technology and the abundance of online offerings from professional trainers confirm that exercising in one's own apartment can be just as effective as in a fitness studio.
Hormonal Health
During the pandemic, many people grappled with ongoing tension, stress, and anxiety, which triggered hormonal imbalances. Hormones govern numerous vital bodily functions—mood, well-being, behavior, and they directly affect the health and condition of skin, hair, and nails—so restoring and maintaining hormonal equilibrium is another key wellness trend to watch.
“Hormones are like music played in a beautiful but sometimes discordant symphony,” explains obstetrician-gynecologist Eden Fromberg of New York. “When hormones are played too loud or quiet, too fast or slow, and do not interact with others, the sound produced can irritate the entire system.”
In recent years, the beauty industry has even introduced specialized skincare lines adapted to hormonal cycles (these products help address hormonal imbalances that cause age-related acne and premature aging). There is also growing demand for vitamin complexes that play a role in hormone regulation.

Sexual Revolution

Our wellness trend list concludes with intimate health care. The sex industry aims to reshape attitudes toward sexual pleasure and self-satisfaction—and, it must be said, it is succeeding. Intimate topics are increasingly stepping out of the shadows, fueled by sex toy manufacturers as well as celebrities and other opinion leaders who endorse them. The period 2020–2021 can safely be called the dawn of a new sexual revolution, one led by women.
“I believe that sexual health is a basic human right,” Dakota Johnson stated in an interview. ─ “Consensual sex and intimate pleasure are manifestations of caring for the body. Everyone should have access to quality sex products, regardless of gender, age of majority or type of sexuality.” Last year, the actress became an investor and creative director of the wellness brand Maude, which promotes mindfulness and sex education.
Following her lead, Cara Delevingne announced a collaboration with another intimate goods brand… The model became co-owner and creative director of Lora DiCarlo, a company that produces sex toys. The brand states its mission as breaking down stereotypes around sex and the female orgasm. These themes are also explored in a blog about sexuality and its forms on the Lora DiCarlo website.
