Portland carries several nicknames, with "City of Roses" and "Rose City" being among the most recognized. Travelers passing through might initially wonder about the floral moniker, yet after living in Portland for twelve months, those signature blooms start appearing on every other block.
HOW DID PORTLAND BECOME KNOWN AS THE CITY OF ROSES?
Historians generally point to a handful of events from the early twentieth century that helped cement the reputation.
The earliest chapter dates to 1888, when Portland hosted an Episcopal Church gathering. Visitors there began referring to the location as the City of Roses, and that label eventually spread by 1905. Harry Lane, Portland's mayor at the time, proposed establishing a recurring festival celebrating the flower. His idea came to fruition two years later with the inaugural Portland Rose Festival.
A separate account traces back to Oregon Life Insurance Company, today known as Standard Insurance. Its founder, Leo Samuel, cultivated roses outside his residence and would set out a pair of garden shears so passersby could clip a bloom. That small gesture motivated others to plant roses at their homes and storefronts.
Perhaps most importantly, Portland's climate suits roses remarkably well. That agricultural reality is precisely why the city hosts the International Rose Test Garden, a facility where breeders from across the globe send new rose cultivars for assessment.
