The 2018 Detroit Auto Show continues its parade of pickup truck unveilings with Ram introducing the 2019 1500. This model boasts a refreshed exterior that conceals a new frame, upgraded powertrains, and impressive cabin technology.
Built on a fresh frame composed of 98-percent high-strength steel, the 1500 enhances durability while reducing weight. High-strength steel is strategically placed in the body, and aluminum is used for the hood and tailgate. Together, the frame and body shed approximately 225 pounds compared to last year's version.
The engine lineup has been revamped, featuring a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, both paired with a new eTorque mild hybrid system. This hybrid setup includes a belt-driven motor generator, a 48-volt lithium-ion battery, and regenerative braking.
The V6 delivers 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, with the hybrid components adding up to 90 pound-feet of extra torque. The Hemi V8, producing 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet, gains up to 130 pound-feet of additional torque for short bursts. Both engines connect to an updated eight-speed automatic transmission.
With the Hemi engine, the 1500's maximum payload climbs to 2,300 pounds, and towing capacity reaches 12,750 pounds.
For diesel enthusiasts, a Ram spokesperson confirmed plans for a diesel variant, but it won't arrive until later in the 2019 model year. Once a unique offering in the light-duty segment, the diesel 1500 will now face competition from Ford's F-150 and Chevy's newly announced Silverado.
Improving on the previous 1500's smooth ride, thanks to the five-link rear coil suspension, are new dampers. A four-corner air suspension remains an option for those seeking top-tier ride and handling.
Visually, the truck introduces a new Ram font and badges, while the iconic crosshair grille is retired. Six new grilles, varying by trim level, will be offered, along with 16 fresh wheel designs. The sheetmetal features a new power-bulge hood, updated hood badging, and taller bedrails on a truck that is slightly wider and about 4 inches taller than the outgoing model in both quad and crew cab configurations.
Ram 1500 Rebel models stand out with functional hood vents, powder-coated steel bumpers, skid plates, and specific 18-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires.
The extended frame also provides a roomier cabin, featuring a new raised center stack positioned closer to the driver. FCA's fourth-generation Uconnect system and a new 12-inch touchscreen with split-screen capability are available. This large display is oriented vertically, like a Tesla or Volvo, and can run two apps simultaneously. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, while navigation with 3D map graphics, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system are optional.
Ram claims class-leading interior storage, double that of competitors, with a center console configurable in 12 ways. Convenience and comfort include up to five USB ports, two 115-volt power outlets, an optional wireless charging pad, and available heated and cooled rear seats with seat backs that recline up to 8 degrees.
For safety, the new Ram can be equipped with a 360-degree camera, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
The 2019 Ram 1500 will hit dealerships in the first quarter of 2018. Pricing has not been announced, but the current 1500 starts at around $28,000.
