Three Interior Design Trends to Embrace This Year

Social media is now a major force shaping home design trends, just like many other aspects of modern life. Get expert predictions for 2018 from design guru Lori Evans.

Three Interior Design Trends to Embrace This Year

In today's world, social media heavily influences design trends, much like everything else. Are your walls Instagram-worthy? Is your living room Pinterest-perfect? What's the latest shade of millennial pink? To get answers, we consulted our in-house design expert, Lori Evans, for her insights on what's coming in the new year. Here are her top predictions for 2018.

1. Go Bold

An Instagram feed thrives on vibrant color. Evans recommends injecting bold hues and mixing patterns without hesitation. "Because of Instagram, homeowners are eager to showcase their spaces, and striking color combinations naturally attract more engagement," she explains. She highlights energizing elements such as colorful pillow assortments, geometric designs, and eclectic décor accents that generate buzz and approval.

2. Let There Be Light

Any dedicated Instagram user understands that lighting can make or ruin a picture—that's why floor-to-ceiling windows without curtains are becoming increasingly popular. "Individuals crave maximum natural light," says Evans. "They desire as many windows as possible. In one current project, we're layering windows—placing one full window above another—so the room is bathed in daylight. People are obsessed with that effect, and I concur. Natural light creates a sense of openness, freshness, and cleanliness in any space."

3. Photo-Ready Walls

Cafés, hotels, and restaurants have long recognized that an eye-catching, photogenic wall can attract a steady stream of patrons. Extending this concept to homes is a natural progression. For social media lovers, having a perfect photo backdrop just steps from their bedroom is incredibly convenient. "We're seeing this trend everywhere," notes Evans. "Succulent walls, reclaimed wood features, or exposed brick. You're essentially building a destination within your own home. This is being driven by social media influencers as well."
