Meanwhile, a Baptist pastor and early Twitter adopter named Stephen Miller was quick enough to claim @StephenMiller, only to be flooded with angry messages intended for Trump’s policy advisor of the same name. Instead of letting it get him down, Miller turned the negative spotlight into a charity campaign, raising $1,300 to adopt and bring two Chinese children to the U.S. Using your online presence to support immigrants might be the most effective way to prove you’re not associated with Trump’s inner circle.
Then there’s a Florida software developer who was unlucky enough to be born with the name Mike Pence (@mikepence). He regularly receives abuse over his supposed Christian fundamentalist and anti-LGBTQ+ views—which is ironic, since this Mike is a vocal atheist who supports LGBTQ+ rights.
But the name doesn’t even have to be an exact match for the online fury to find the wrong target. Ironically, some journalists have also been on the receiving end of hate meant for the very people trying to undermine the mainstream media. Washington Post columnist John Kelly (@JohnKelly) constantly redirects angry tweets intended for his White House chief counterpart, as does Fox News contributor @StephenMiller. And for reasons unclear, journalist Kelly Andersen (@kellyamedia) from Fox 45 in Baltimore is bombarded with hate directed at Trump’s campaign advisor Kellyanne Conway—simply because their names share a few letters and both work in media.
But no Trump-related Twitter twin is as heartwarming as Eric Trump, a British schoolteacher and bread baker. Whenever he gets overwhelmed by hate aimed at the least impressive Trump offspring, he responds with photos of freshly baked bread and cakes—a gesture so nurturing that no one could possibly confuse him with Donald’s American Psycho-like son.
