Top 7 Show-Stopping Looks from the 2020 Golden Globes

Renee Zellweger, Scarlett Johansson, and Charlize Theron dazzled on the red carpet, while Jennifer Lopez’s dress sparked mixed reactions from fashion critics.

Top 7 Show-Stopping Looks from the 2020 Golden Globes

This year, Renee Zellweger, Scarlett Johansson, and Charlize Theron stole the spotlight on the red carpet, though fashion critics were divided over Jennifer Lopez’s gown.

Long known unofficially as the “Oscars dress rehearsal,” this year’s ceremony drew extra attention from fashion critics—the red carpet hadn’t seen such a burst of colors, prints, and unique details in years.

Floor-length gowns, pumps, lace, voluminous skirts, bare shoulders, sequins, and crystals… Stars glowed in every shade of the rainbow. Unlike 2018, when black was the official color, and 2019, with its focus on blue, this year the organizers relaxed the strict dress code.

Hollywood celebrities seized the freedom of choice and went all out! We’ve picked the best women’s red carpet looks.

The “Queen of Spades” of the evening was actress Jennifer Aniston. There’s no denying that black is the most striking color—it contrasts beautifully with the red carpet! This time, she chose a strapless Dior corset dress with a dramatic train.

Aniston completed the chic look with a necklace and a single ring. Even if the star didn’t meet all fan expectations (she didn’t win Best Actress in a Drama Series and didn’t arrive with ex-husband Brad Pitt), she looked truly regal!

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman delivered a surefire “blonde in red” look, also competing for Best Actress in a TV Drama. She appeared in a rich red Versace bustier dress with one bare shoulder and a daring slit to the hip.

In this outfit, Nicole resembled an elegant figurine. Fashion critics have already called her look a work of art. She accessorized with a thin bracelet, a fringed handbag, and long gold earrings matching the bag.

Another “girl in red” was Scarlett Johansson, the highest-paid actress of 2019. Her Golden Globe appearance felt like a rehearsal for walking down the aisle—though not in white, but in extravagant red.

The ceremony’s deepest neckline, a huge bow at the waist, plenty of draping, and an incredibly long train—the dress from top wedding brand Vera Wang was a real showstopper! The charming blonde beamed with happiness as she walked arm-in-arm with her fiancé Colin Jost.

Another favorite Hollywood blonde made a bold move by choosing neon green for the red carpet. Her outfit might have been the most colorful of the evening.

The dress’s creator, Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, usually sticks to classic evening colors, but she made an exception for the star—and it paid off. The dress, with a transparent corset blending several trends (Greek silhouette, open shoulder, layering), perfectly matched the actress’s emerald eyes. A black body underneath highlighted her slim figure. A choker necklace completed the ensemble.

Taylor Swift

Last year’s highest-paid singer, Taylor Swift, also bet on color. She chose an Etro Couture dress with large yellow flowers on a blue-green background.

The result was very unusual. An open back, a delightfully long flowing train, and iridescent Lorraine Schwartz earrings made the country-pop star one of the most talked-about celebrities of the evening.

This year, J.Lo was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the second time since 1998! For the special occasion, she chose a special outfit: a Valentino Haute Couture dress in three shades—gold, white, and emerald.

A fluffy skirt and a huge bow at the front gave the look extra charm. Many compared the singer to a Christmas present—not a bad association!

Renee Zellweger

Who truly got their due at the 2020 Golden Globes was Renee Zellweger! First, she won Best Actress in a Drama for her role in Judy. Second, everyone noticed she’s in great shape. Finally, the simple sky-blue Armani dress looked stunning on her toned figure.

After several years away from film (including due to unsuccessful plastic surgery), her return was truly triumphant. “Refined simplicity” could sum up her look: open shoulders, a slit revealing slender legs, and minimal jewelry. The winner’s image was completed by an elegant hairstyle and matching pumps.
