Hollywood's well of creativity dried up long ago, and today's blockbusters feel more like extended commercials than genuine cinema. Why bother with original concepts or fresh faces when you can simply cast Jessica Chastain in another sequel alongside Pennywise? Instead of developing new stories, studios slap CGI onto a plot from a VHS tape that most millennials never watched, then release it in IMAX and 3D. Totally not a cynical money grab. And let's be honest—the only people still owning VCRs are in assisted living facilities with no control over their bodily functions. That demographic supposedly drives ticket sales and gets pretentious amateur critics buzzing. I actually expected a Killer Klowns from Outer Space reboot before IT Chapter Two. Kids today aren't scared of demonic clowns anymore. That's what happens when you grow up with a smartphone from age three—you can instantly Google and learn that your fear of rainbow-headed monsters is based on made-up nonsense.
Jessica Chastain has more in common with the mutant zombies Will Smith fought in I Am Legend than with a typical A-list actress. Now two pale, aging redheads will share the screen in a franchise that might rival Saw for number of sequels. Bravo, Hollywood, for your invaluable contributions to the art of film.
