We've always believed that age is nothing more than a number, regardless of how many candles are on your birthday cake. To champion this mindset, SunLife has been running a series of interviews with inspiring individuals over 50 who demonstrate that embracing new challenges is possible at any stage of life.
One truly remarkable woman is Tessa, an 82-year-old who still attends ballet classes on a regular basis. SunLife visited her local dance studio to chat about her passion, where Tessa revealed that ballet makes her feel two decades younger, and has done wonders for her posture, balance, and self-assurance.
Ballet is often seen as an activity reserved for the young and extremely fit, but Tessa is shattering that stereotype. She insists that ballet is accessible to everyone, no matter their age. As she glides gracefully from one classical pose to the next, Tessa explains how dancing has enriched her later years: “After a ballet class you feel full of energy, inspired and ready to do anything.”
“Ballet definitely gives you confidence,” Tessa says, as she points her toe across the floor and sinks into a demi-plié. Even at home, she stays fit and flexible by practicing simple ballet moves in the kitchen while waiting for her dinner to cook!
If there’s one lesson Tessa has learned over the years, it’s that getting older can be a wonderful experience if you maintain a relaxed outlook. She says this attitude has kept her feeling “a force to be reckoned with” even at 82… Tessa, we adore you!
