People tend to have strong opinions about Chris Brown—either they adore him or they can't stand him. There's rarely a middle ground. Yet, regardless of where you stand, one thing is undeniable: the guy is incredibly gifted when it comes to making music.
Take, for instance, his latest collaboration with Lil Dicky on a song and video. The premise isn't entirely original, drawing inspiration from the 2003 film "Freaky Friday," where a daughter (played by Lindsay Lohan) and her mother (Jamie Lee Curtis) magically swap bodies for a few days.
Chris and Dicky's video follows a similar storyline, but what sets their version apart—making it both hilarious and impressively clever—is the accompanying track, also titled "Freaky Friday."
They could have skipped that awkward first minute of the video (I understand the intent, but... no), yet from the 1:03 mark onward, it's pure brilliance.
After Lil Dicky and Chris Brown each wish for "a different life" (thanks to a random fortune cookie vendor), Dicky wakes up in Chris Breezy's body, which is currently sandwiched between two women.
Not only is he thrilled about having neck tattoos, but he's having an absolute blast: singing, dancing, scrolling through a flood of DMs, FaceTiming Kanye, and more. But then he realizes, "Holy sh*t, I've got a kid," he sings, naturally in Chris Brown's voice. (Side note: It's still debated whether that little girl is actually his daughter Royalty, but she seems convinced it's her.)
Then, Dicky has a revelation... 'Wait! I'm black, which means I can finally use the n-word without consequences. BECAUSE I AM A N**GA NOW!'
"Wonder if I can say the N-Word?" Dicky (as Breezy) asks himself, "Wait, can I really say the N-word?!"

Then comes the chorus, which is equally fantastic (and highly inventive):
The next part of the song/video features Lil Dicky's verse, rapped from Chris Brown's perspective, as he's now trapped inside Dicky's body. He's feeling down because he's stuck living as an awkward-looking white guy, complete with his "little dick(y)." (Now you get where the name "Lil Dicky" comes from, right?)
One upside: Chris (as Dicky) can walk down the street without being hounded by paparazzi or mobbed by fans. Even the friendly white folks in his nice white neighborhood wave at him, as if they, gasp, actually like him and aren't intimidated. But after savoring life's small pleasures—like finally wearing blue without worry—Chris grows tired of being Lil Dicky (his Mom won't stop calling, OMG), so he's eager to get his old body back.
To make matters worse, Dicky, still in Chris' body, is out here posting dick pics on Twitter (and trending because of it), enjoying courtside basketball games, and chilling in the VIP section at the club.
After what feels like a day of searching, Chris (as Dicky) finally tracks down Dicky (as Chris), who refuses to acknowledge him. This drives Chris to go full Chris Brown on a security guard, smashing a beer bottle over his head to get face-to-face access. The two eventually reason with each other (after Dicky reminds an enraged Chris that hurting him means hurting himself), and they swap back into their original bodies just in time for a dance break.
There's no reason this video shouldn't sweep all the awards at this year's MTV VMAs. As far as I'm concerned, this is the video of the year for 2018.
And if you're still not convinced, stick around until the end for a bonus round featuring Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled, and Kendall Jenner (which felt a bit awkward to me, but if she's fine with it, so am I).
