Which DIY Projects Are Making a Comeback (and Which Aren’t) from Thrifty Decor Chick

Reflecting on favorite home projects from our previous house—deciding which ones to recreate and which to leave behind in our new space.

Which DIY Projects Are Making a Comeback (and Which Aren’t) from Thrifty Decor Chick

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to which projects from our former home I’d like to bring into this one. I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m aiming for a simpler aesthetic here, and I’ve intentionally held off on starting anything until now. (The backyard situation sort of forced that pause.) A couple of elements have already found their way into this house—like a massive DIY chalkboard in the mudroom:

I’ll never get tired of the crisp white contrast against the wall color—it just brings me joy. (You can find the tutorial for adding this look to your home here.)

This time around, it will have a slightly different feel, but I’m eager to dive in! Can’t wait!

I’m adding them to a wall in my office, but this time I’ll go with color instead of white. I also intend to include them in the basement, though the design will be quite different.

A window seat had been a dream of mine for most of my adult life, so I was overjoyed when we added one in the kitchen! The new version will be much longer, and extra storage is always a win. 😉

This one will require some planning to get right. We need to make sure we use the space efficiently. It will involve removing the current wire shelving and cutting it down—definitely a big undertaking.

Those are the main projects I know we’ll repeat here—but there are a couple you probably won’t see much of (or at all). I never say never, so don’t be mad if I change my mind someday. 😉

One is a specific wall treatment:

Oh, I love beadboard. I look at this photo and absolutely adore it. But it just doesn’t seem to fit this house as well. And man, is it a pain to paint! Easy to install—but painting it is a nightmare!

I know I mentioned adding built-ins in this house, but on the flip side, I won’t be adding as many. At least that’s the plan for now. They served us beautifully in the old house because they felt meant to be where I placed them.

But in our son’s room, they really limited where his bed and furniture could go. We’re going for a similar look but without the permanence in his new room. (Hope to tackle that next month.) And we just don’t need the storage like we did for his toys in the basement:

We’ll have some in the basement, but it won’t cover the entire wall. And overall, this house is more open, so there aren’t as many spots where built-ins would fit well.

One more that might surprise you! I don’t plan to install hardwood floors throughout the house like we did before. This is one I could see changing my mind on, but so far we’re really enjoying the cozy feel of carpet in certain areas. I think if anything, I might add it to my office, but that would be it.

Again, I may go back on every single one of these! Who knows? But this is how I feel at the moment. We all know it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. 😉

Are there certain features of your house that you would definitely repeat in another? Some things you’d leave behind? I’m sure I’ll come up with more as time goes on. That’s part of the fun of a new house!
