A reflection on 2017's best projects and rooms, plus a personal update on recovery from nerve pain. New year, new look back!

Top Highlights and Favorites from 2017! by Thrifty Decor Chick

HELLO everyone!! I’m back! I trust your holiday season was delightful and your new year has started off well.

Having never experienced this kind of pain before, I didn’t realize it was nerve-related and overdid it. So for roughly two weeks now I’ve been (very, very gradually) recovering from what the doctor suspects was a bulging disk that led to nerve pain. I had an MRI last week and am still waiting for results, but overall I’m feeling MUCH improved. I still think it will be another week or two before I’m back to 100 percent.

I’m no lightweight. 😉 I can tolerate a fair amount of pain — but this brought me to my knees. I’ve never felt anything like it and pray I never do again. When you’re hurting that badly, you can only concentrate on what’s right in front of you. And since Christmas was approaching, my main focus was just getting things ready for our family.

My husband has been absolutely amazing!! We hosted a gathering a few days after Christmas, and he handled everything while I rested my back and leg. I HATE being unable to do what I want — slowing down is tough for me. This has certainly taught me to listen to my body. And I now have a whole new level of respect and compassion for those living with chronic pain.

Yesterday I managed to take down most of the Christmas decorations, and a few days ago I hung some pictures. A couple of days back I was able to walk through Target for about 15 minutes without discomfort — those are big wins for me, but I’m eager to get back to my usual routine! I didn’t plan to be away this long, but I’m grateful it happened during a quiet period for both life and the blog.

One of my favorite traditions around this time is to reflect on the year and showcase the rooms and projects I completed. It gives me a great sense of achievement, especially lately! 😉 This is a fun retrospective because it features spaces from our old house as well as a roundup of the rooms I’ve revealed in the new one.

We loved that sofa so much that we now have a matching set in the new family room!

Naturally, the first photos of each room in our new home are the most basic you’ll ever see them. It takes me a while to settle on a look, and then there’s the time and budget to consider. 🙂 This house is exactly what we wanted, but I have plenty of ideas for it — because, well… it’s me, and adding custom touches is what I love.

Overall, our new home feels more open and brighter, and I find myself wanting to keep it much simpler than our last place. At least for now.

I’m starting to experiment with some concepts in this room — I want to do something dramatic in here!

I have a few treatment options in mind for that wall!

Right now it’s packed with Christmas bins that need to go back to the garage, and I love that the clutter is hidden away from our living area. LOVE.

We have a long wall in there that’s begging for something! I think I’m starting to form an idea.

Funny, but from the start I had this room fully pictured in my mind. I knew exactly what I wanted to do! That might happen sooner rather than later because I really need some storage in here.

This year is exciting because come May I’ll be celebrating TEN years of writing Thrifty Decor Chick — whoot!! Pretty neat.

If you have questions about anything in the rooms, there should be links to items in the posts. (Let me know if not!) Did you miss any of these reveals — from either the old house or the new one? I’ll be back later this week, thank you for your patience as I heal!
