Taken from the producer's upcoming album, Knock Knock.
DJ Koze has dropped the latest single 'Pick Up', a key highlight from Knock Knock, his first full-length release in five years.
The cut revolves around a tight disco loop and a melancholic vocal sample from Gladys Knight, who repeats the line, “It’s sad to think/I guess neither one of us/Wants to be the first to say goodbye.” As with many of the producer's finest works, the sadness is offset by a touch of dry humor, delivered here through an ultra-minimal music video.
For most of its duration, the video shows only a black screen (“which leaves space for your own imagination!” the description notes) accompanied by text annotations about the track. It starts with straightforward notes (“Vocal sample #1”, “Disco sample loops 6x”), but quickly becomes self-referential with lines like “brain realizes song consists of only three elements” and “deep feeling of happiness … because brain already has too much information.”
'Pick Up' follows earlier singles from Knock Knock, such as the expansive 'Seeing Aliens' and the incredible Róisín Murphy collaboration 'Illumination'.
Knock Knock arrives May 5 via Koze's own Pampa Records.
Next up: DJ Koze reworks one of his favorite Bon Iver songs into something fresh on his upcoming album Knock Knock.
