Use sounds captured from Gately's household appliances—her boiler, scanner, and oven—to create hauntingly musical effects.
To start 2018, Ableton is offering a special giveaway from Tri Angle musician Katie Gately. The free Instrument Rack, titled "Kately's Haunted House," includes four sample chains, each equipped with distinct effects.
Gately explains on Ableton's site: "I'm an effects enthusiast, so the goal is to explore a wide range of effect types to achieve varied playful outcomes. I want every chain to have its own personality and behavior, without descending into chaotic distortion."
Based in Los Angeles, Gately has spent years crafting music from field recordings and vocal manipulations. She first emerged in 2013 on labels Public Information and Blue Tapes, and later caught the attention of Björk, who commissioned a remix of a track from the 2015 album Vulnicura. In 2016, she unveiled her album "Color" on Tri Angle.
Alongside the free pack, Ableton has produced two videos that explore Gately's sound sourcing and manipulation techniques. She demonstrates how ordinary items such as her oven and scanner can be transformed into entirely new sonic landscapes through pitch shifting and effects application.
Regarding the custom Instrument Rack, Gately says: "I hope users will deconstruct these chains and customize them—experiment with different sounds and make them smarter, wackier, or cooler. I also hope this encourages people to record noises in their own homes and discover the everyday magic hiding there."
This complimentary rack is available for download on Ableton's website and comes just before the launch of Ableton Live 10, anticipated in early 2018.
