We're accustomed to seeing celebrities looking their absolute best. They sparkle on the silver screen and at red carpet events, appear picture-perfect, and flood their social media with joyful snapshots from exotic getaways. Yet behind the glamorous façade, some have been quietly coping with serious health issues for years. While certain stars are open about their diagnoses, others prefer to keep their struggles private.
So which medical conditions are famous people actually dealing with?

The internationally acclaimed actor has been managing type 2 diabetes ever since 2013. Tom has openly blamed his younger years, admitting he made plenty of poor choices that he's still paying for. He says he paid no attention to his eating habits and never really looked after his wellbeing. When the pounds started piling on, he initially brushed it off. But once the diagnosis came through, he overhauled his entire approach to food and nutrition.
2. Halle Berry

Like Tom Hanks, this American actress also has diabetes. Her diagnosis came as a complete surprise. She was just 23 when she collapsed on set and was rushed to hospital, where doctors delivered the news. Halle was devastated. Nobody in her family had diabetes, and there was no hereditary link to the illness. The young actress had no option but to pull herself together and start prioritising her health. She has often credited regular exercise with helping her stay on top of the condition.
3. Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin fought Lyme disease for years and never fully bounced back. He continues to deal with the chronic form of tick-borne borreliosis. The acclaimed actor still kicks himself for not reacting sooner. He initially mistook the early warning signs of the illness for a nasty bout of flu, repeating the same misstep Avril Lavigne once made. Like other famous Lyme disease sufferers, the Hollywood star endured multiple rounds of treatment before he was well enough to return to work. Even so, the lingering effects of the condition still catch up with him from time to time.
4. Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson has been living with hepatitis C for more than a decade. She caught the virus from her former husband Tommy Lee after sharing his tattoo needle. Not long ago, the 48-year-old actress revealed that she had finally beaten the disease: “I'm cured! I just found out! My hope is that we can all get access to treatment. It's coming soon. I know it will be tough to get it …”

Kim has been dealing with a significant skin condition for most of her adult life. Although there are plenty of psoriasis treatments available these days, Kim says none of them have really worked for her. She takes comfort in knowing the condition isn't contagious, which means she can socialise freely without worrying about passing anything on. Kim has also shared that psoriasis once made her deeply self-conscious during nude photo shoots, though ironically it was those very shoots that helped her grow more confident in her own skin. She relies on self-tanner to mask the red patches and create a more uniform complexion.
Supermodel Cara Delevingne also has psoriasis, and flare-ups tend to hit her whenever she's under stress.

In early 2014, Selena Gomez announced she was stepping back from her career. Fans were left wondering what had prompted the decision, and Selena eventually opened up about the real reason – she was undergoing chemotherapy following a lupus diagnosis. The singer had been at risk of having a stroke, which made immediate treatment essential.
It's unclear which form of lupus Selena had. The two main types are lupus vulgaris and systemic lupus erythematosus. The first is essentially tuberculosis of the skin, while the second is an autoimmune condition that targets connective tissue. The latter is what Lady Gaga battles, leaving her plagued by constant exhaustion, aching muscles, sudden temperature swings and a telltale rash across her cheeks.
Singer Seal developed the distinctive scars on his face after going through lupus erythematosus as a child. While the visible signs of the illness have been treated, an underlying immune deficiency means he still depends on medication to keep his body functioning properly.
7. Charlie Sheen: living with HIV

The revelation caused a media storm: during a televised interview, the well-known actor Charlie Sheen confirmed that he had been battling HIV for several years. He also admitted to paying off blackmailers who had threatened to expose him. The tipping point was a leak – word of his condition had reached tabloid editors. Sheen figured the time had come to come clean. The fallout was immediate. Within 24 hours, four former partners filed lawsuits, claiming they had no idea he was HIV-positive. Yet there was an upside too: Sheen suddenly became one of the most talked-about names in Hollywood, fielding offers for talk show appearances and acting gigs. In a strange twist, the diagnosis made him more famous than ever.
8. Michael J. Fox: Parkinson's disease

At 30, Michael felt like he could conquer the world. Then came a devastating diagnosis – Parkinson's disease – that threatened to derail everything. Doctors warned him that by 40, he would be a shadow of his former self. The news hit him so hard that he turned to alcohol to cope. Luckily, his wife, actress Tracy Pollan, helped him get his drinking under control. He kept working steadily, and in 2000 he stepped away from the hit TV series "Spin City". That was when he finally told his castmates and the public that he was living with a progressive, incurable illness.
Still, the actor continues to take on projects, even if his schedule isn't quite as packed as it used to be. He set up a foundation dedicated to researching Parkinson's and developing new treatments. Michael J. Fox has no intention of throwing in the towel! We wish him strength, patience and a long, fulfilling life.

A few years back, the world found out that Catherine was dealing with a mental health condition. On a couple of occasions, the actress had public outbursts and found herself unable to rein in her temper. That eventually led her to seek professional help. Specialists concluded that years of intense stress had brought on her condition.
Not long before her diagnosis, her husband Michael Douglas had been treated for throat cancer. Douglas put up a courageous fight, and Catherine stood by his side throughout. Once Mike was declared cancer-free, however, Catherine's reserves ran out. She had been carrying the weight of that stress for far too long. Today, Zeta-Jones keeps her condition under control, though it can't be cured outright. Reports suggest she goes through a course of treatment every two to three years.
10. Tom Cruise: dyslexia

Not many people realise that as a child, the future Hollywood A-lister struggled to process written words. Tom also had real trouble with writing. Classmates teased him, and some of his teachers assumed he wasn't bright, when in reality he was dealing with dyslexia. Today, Tom credits Scientology with helping him overcome the condition. Whether that's the reason or not, he's now perfectly capable of writing, reading and memorising enormous scripts with ease. The diagnosis is essentially a thing of the past.
