Cult Irish indie favourites Microdisney are set to return to the stage for the first time in roughly thirty years. Though their existence spanned only a handful of years during the middle of the 1980s, the group carved out a reputation as critics' darlings, drawing widespread praise for the way they fused Cathal Coughlan's sharp, sardonic wordplay with Sean O'Hagan's polished, glowing instrumental textures.
During their active years, Microdisney built up a small but treasured body of work. Their 1983 debut Everything's Fantastic introduced their distinctive chemistry, while the follow-up The Clock Comes Down the Stairs (1985) climbed to the top of the UK indie chart, cementing their status as a cult favourite among indie collectors.
Once the band dissolved, its two leading figures went their separate ways. Coughlan launched The Fatima Mansions, a noisier and more abrasive project that landed a handful of UK chart entries in the early 1990s. O'Hagan, meanwhile, founded the dreamy, orchestral-leaning outfit High Llamas and later joined the lineup of Stereolab.
The announcement will no doubt come as welcome news to longtime devotees, many of whom have spent three decades hoping for another chance to see the band perform live.
