Paul Simon takes the stage at Forest Hills in 2016 (additional photos by Greg Cristman)
Word had circulated that Paul Simon planned to hang up his touring boots following his 2016 trek — a run that concluded with the Forest Hills High School alum delivering a pair of hometown performances in Forest Hills. Yet the singer-songwriter defied expectations by hitting the road again in 2017, highlighted by an extraordinary collaboration with yMusic at the Eaux Claires Festival. Now, amid what appears to be a season crowded with goodbye tour reveals, the artist behind "Rhymin' Simon" appears to be retiring from the stage permanently. According to The Telegraph (via Stereogum), he is scheduled to perform a final concert on July 15 at London's Hyde Park, slotting into the Barclaycard British Summer Time event. Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor are slated as opening acts. Tickets become available this Friday (2/2), with a presale window opening today (1/30) for Barclaycard members.
Should this genuinely mark the end of Simon's performing career, he'll exit on a triumphant note. His most recent record, 2016's Stranger to Stranger, stood as his strongest release in quite some time.
