Cut These Daily Habits and Watch Your Aging Slow Down

Brian Syuki breaks down how ongoing inflammation speeds aging and raises the odds of chronic illness.

Cut These Daily Habits and Watch Your Aging Slow Down

Ongoing inflammation speeds up the aging process and raises your odds of chronic illness. By steering clear of the habits outlined below, you can dial down inflammation and hold off premature aging.

Inflammation isn't the villain it's often made out to be. It serves as a vital immune function, clearing away toxins and combating infection. See how a mosquito bite swells and reddens? That's acute inflammation hard at work.

Although acute inflammation can be unpleasant, it actually helps safeguard your overall health. The real threat lies in chronic inflammation, which operates quietly without obvious signs.

Chronic inflammation drags on for months or even years. Several of your everyday routines may quietly feed this hidden fire, quickening aging and elevating your chances of conditions like diabetes.

The encouraging part? Avoiding the habits listed below can help you keep inflammation in check and slow premature aging.

1. PROLONGED SITTING

A wider waistline shouldn't be your only worry if you're parked in a chair for most of the day. Research tracking 505 men and women revealed that women who logged longer weekday sitting hours showed markers of persistent low-grade inflammation and weakened metabolic function. Notably, the same connection didn't appear in men.

If you're still on the fence, consider this study as well. It found that women who sat for six hours or more daily faced a 34 percent higher chance of early death.

Make a point of standing up several times every hour, or invest in a standing desk.

2. EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Here's something worth noting: moderate drinkers tend to outlive heavy drinkers. Research shows that consuming one to seven drinks per week may lower the odds of death and heart failure.

Push past seven drinks and the script flips. Heavy alcohol intake sparks inflammation and accelerates aging. In fact, excessive drinking has long been tied to fine lines, wrinkles, and acne flare-ups.

3. INSUFFICIENT VITAMIN D

Vitamin D plays a bigger role than most of us realize. Scientists only recently uncovered its ability to suppress inflammation.

Those on plant-based diets can source vitamin D from fortified foods, mushrooms, and tofu. Aim for a minimum of 20 minutes of sun exposure each day as well.

4. SMOKING

Nearly everyone knows smoking is tied to cancer and heart problems. What gets less attention is how smoking degrades collagen, the protein responsible for firm, youthful skin.

As collagen breaks down, skin loses its elasticity and lines deepen. Quit smoking and pair that with strategies to boost collagen levels.

5. CONSUMING RED MEAT

A Harvard study tracking 46,500 participants linked red meat consumption to heightened gut inflammation. Each daily serving bumped up the risk by 18 percent.

Interestingly, swapping in poultry or fish actually reduced inflammation risk by 20 percent.

Red meat carries additional downsides, including elevated C-reactive protein and arachidonic acid, two compounds known to drive aging, according to research.

6. CONSUMING PROCESSED FOODS

White bread, margarine, candy, vegetable oils, and similar processed items fan the flames of inflammation and aging.

A smart swap: load up on omega-3-rich foods like flaxseeds, avocado, and olive oil instead.

7. POOR SLEEP HABITS

Whether insomnia keeps you up at night or you're simply trying to squeeze more hours into the day, skimping on sleep is aging you faster.
