The audience at last night's Emmy Awards broadcast was full of bewildered, cringing, and eye-rolling reactions. A good portion of the awkward facial expressions captured on camera (Merritt Wever gazing blankly at the lens like a disinterested teenager, Chrissy Teigen ducking for cover) seemed to be responses to Colin Jost's barely-there lips and Michael Che's nonexistent charisma. However, one person in the crowd appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself. In an unexpected cameo, the infamous Teddy Perkins apparently left his sprawling Atlanta mansion and traveled across the country for the event! I wasn't aware he was still breathing. I assumed he had suffocated on a chunk of ostrich egg.

Naturally, Teddy Perkins is a fictional character. He was portrayed by Donald Glover in an Atlanta installment called "Teddy Perkins." Given that Donald was present at the ceremony, several people guessed he had ducked backstage to swap into costume for the bit, but anyone familiar with the episode knows this was no "Cher swapping one sequined jumpsuit for another" kind of transformation. As Teddy Perkins, Donald becomes entirely unidentifiable.

Furthermore, some have pointed out that Donald is too short to be Emmy Teddy. Below is Teddy hugging the famously towering Bill Hader. Pint-sized Donald barely reaches his shoulder.
Some suggested it could have been Atlanta actor Lakeith Stanfield, which would address the height issue, though it doesn't clarify how he and Teddy ended up in the same snapshot.
That points to Vulture's leading theory that it was Donald's brother and Atlanta writer Stephen Glover. Or perhaps it was someone completely off our radar.
As for me, I'd rather keep the legend alive that Teddy Perkins is genuine and simply dropped by to convince himself he still exists and matters in modern Hollywood.
