From Debut to Final Film: Tracking the Evolution of Keanu Reeves, Kate Beckinsale, Ryan Gosling, Charlize Theron, and Milla Jovovich. We've grown so used to our favorite performers that the gradual shifts in their appearance often slip right past us. Those changes typically only hit home during red-carpet moments, when fresh lines or silver strands betray the passing years. But can the same be said on the silver screen? This article tracks the earliest and most recent work of several A-list stars to spotlight just how dramatic that journey has been.
Hollywood A-Listers' Career Beginnings and Greatest Hits
Fancy taking a nostalgic stroll down memory lane? 😉 And just in case any of the films mentioned below spark your curiosity, we'll point you toward where you can find them.
Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves, who has become something of an internet sensation, landed his initial film part in the hockey-themed "Young Blood" back in 1986. However, his showbiz journey actually kicked off years earlier on the stage. Reeves was a mere nine years old when he made his theatrical debut, appearing in a production of the musical "Damn Yankees."
His face actually first graced Canadian television through the CBC network. Like countless aspiring actors at the start of their careers, he wasn't above taking on commercial gigs to pay the bills.

Young Blood, in which he took on the role of a hockey goaltender, stands as one of his earliest substantial credits. His filmography then spans The Matrix, Bill and Ted, On the Crest of the Wave, Constantine: Lord of Darkness, The Devil's Advocate, and most recently John Wick 3 (2019)—currently his latest theatrical appearance. For the record, 2019 also featured him in "You Are My Doubt" and the mockumentary "Between Two Ferns."
Slated for 2020 are the animated feature "Sponge Bob on the Run," the latest "Bill and Ted" installment, and the long-awaited "Matrix 4," all featuring Reeves.

Kate Beckinsale
The actress we know for embodying the enchanting Romanian princess in Van Helsing has certainly traveled a remarkable distance. Curiously, before stepping in front of the camera, she harbored a deep love for literature and even entered writing competitions. With both parents being actors themselves, it was perhaps inevitable that she'd eventually follow suit. Beckinsale made her screen bow in "Devices and Desires."

That was actually a 1991 miniseries. Yet "Devices and Desires" wasn't her very first appearance—she had already acted in the World War II TV movie "One Against the Wind." Following those early credits, she went on to star in the Shakespeare adaptation "Much Ado About Nothing," along with "The Last Days of Disco," "Ruined Palace," "Pearl Harbor," "Intuition," "Another World," "Aviator," and a string of other projects. In 2019, she took on a part in "The Widow." And 2020 will bring her to screens in "Blow." It'll be fascinating to see what she delivers this time around!

Ryan Gosling
This Canadian actor and musician, twice nominated for an Academy Award, regularly tops lists of Hollywood's most handsome leading men. In contrast to Beckinsale, Gosling's parents had zero connection to the entertainment industry. That said, Ryan began appearing in entertainment projects from a young age, landing a spot on the "Mickey Mouse Club." That's where he crossed paths with future icons like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake—a connection that may have fueled his passion for music (he fronts his own band). His acting debut came via the horror anthology series "Goosebumps" (1995–1998).

His mainstream breakthrough, however, came later, with the stylish neo-noir thriller Drive in 2011. Audiences also know him from the films "Fanatic," "Diary of Remembrance," "Fracture," "Valentine Card," "La La Land," and "Blade Runner 2049." In 2018, he took on the role of Neil Armstrong in "Man on the Moon," which is currently his latest film appearance.

Charlize Theron
The striking South African beauty, whom we remember from The Burning Plain, made her film debut in Two Days in the Valley back in 1996. Notably, Theron hails from South Africa. At her mother's urging, she entered beauty pageants at sixteen, traveling throughout Europe and racking up wins. Her success even attracted a contract offer from a prestigious Milan modeling agency. That modeling path eventually carried her to the United States. Enchanted by the country, she relocated to New York. After modeling, she developed an interest in dance, but had to abandon those studies and move to Los Angeles. Her acting career, however, was born out of pure serendipity. While struggling to cash a check at a bank, she caught the eye of talent manager John Crossby, and that chance encounter altered the course of her life forever.

We mentioned Two Days in the Valley, but it was "The Devil's Advocate" that really cemented her reputation—she shared the screen with Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. Her other acclaimed performances include "Sweet November," "Monster," and "Italian Robbery." In 2019, she appeared in "That Another Couple." And her most recent role is Cypher in "Fast and the Furious 9" (2020).

Milla Jovovich
This actress of Slavic heritage is a true polymath. Beyond her film work, Jovovich has pursued fashion design, music, and modeling. Fashion and beauty were her earliest passions, and she adapted quickly to life in the United States after emigrating with her family in 1980. She booked her first acting gig at just thirteen, appearing in Zalman King's "The Merger of Two Moons" (1988).

By fifteen, she was headlining "Return to the Blue Lagoon," and at sixteen, she portrayed Charlie Chaplin's wife in the biopic "Chaplin." Modeling never took a back seat during this period—she regularly walked runways and became a L'Oréal ambassador. Jovovich has hinted that her attraction to acting may trace back to her mother, a well-known Soviet actress who profoundly shaped her worldview. True stardom, however, arrived in 1996 when she crossed paths with Luke Besson (whom she would later marry). The 1997 release of "The Fifth Element," where she took the lead, cemented her status. Subsequent successes include "Resident Evil," "Perfect Escape," and "Paradise Hills." Her most recent credit to date is 2020's "Monster Hunter."
