Sweet or Smoky? Two Ultra-Simple Skewered Hot Dog Recipes for Your Best Picnic Ever!

Picnics truly define summer, letting you feel completely free outdoors. Countless gadgets exist for a stylish outing, but the real highlight—aside from good company—is the food.

We’d argue that classic shish kebabs have grown a bit predictable. There’s always room to try something fresh. If you’re short on time and don’t want to wait for coals to ash over or the grill to heat up, these recipes are your answer. Trust us, you’ve never made anything this fast!

The beauty of these dishes is that you can prep them at home in just a few minutes. At the picnic, all you need is a small fire to cook them.

Both recipes rely on puff pastry as the star ingredient. You can make it from scratch, but plenty of store-bought options exist. Let’s start with the first one.

Savory Skewered Hot Dogs

Ingredients:

  • 1 package puff pastry,
  • sausages,
  • skewers.

That’s the entire simple list! Slice the puff pastry into strips 1.5–2 cm wide, thread the sausages onto skewers, and wrap each with a strip of dough. Done! Now head to the fire. Just wrap each hot dog in foil first, and keep the flames moderate to avoid burning. After 15 minutes, remove the foil and let the treats brown.

Serve with your favorite sauces—tomato, cheese, or garlic. Be careful: the sausages will be piping hot inside.

Sweet Cinnamon Rolls

Fresh pastries for breakfast at a picnic? Absolutely, if you prepare the blanks. For these sweet buns, you’ll need:

  • 1 package puff pastry,
  • 1 egg yolk,
  • sugar,
  • cinnamon,
  • skewers.

First, roll out the dough and cut it into triangles. Take a skewer and begin winding the dough from the narrow point. For extra sweetness, brush the inside of the dough with butter and sprinkle with sugar before rolling. Then wrap the rolls in foil and bake for 10 minutes until partially cooked.

Once nearly done, dip each roll in beaten yolk, then coat with a mix of sugar and cinnamon. They’re ready for the fire! Watch the heat and get set for the most delicious outdoor breakfast ever.
