Researchers in the United States have composed custom tracks designed to help cats unwind, particularly during anxiety-inducing trips to the veterinarian. Their work was published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.
The foundation of the music rests on sounds cats themselves produce. The team worked within the feline frequency range, sitting approximately two octaves above the human range.
To measure how the music performed, researchers monitored 21 felines across several months of veterinary appointments. During these visits, the cats listened to one of three options: classical compositions, the cat-specific tracks, or complete silence. The custom-made music produced the strongest calming effect.
Commenters beneath the video shared accounts from cat owners who said their pets were clearly affected. Some reported their cats dozed off entirely, while others described the gentle purring typical of very young kittens.
Going forward, the researchers aim to identify which specific elements of the music trigger the calming response. Their next step involves playing individual sounds for cats and watching how they react.
