Your Ultimate Guide to Packing for a European Winter

After three weeks traveling through Austria, Germany, and Slovakia, I've put together the ideal winter packing list for Europe. Find out what to bring, from coats to accessories.

Your Ultimate Guide to Packing for a European Winter

This winter, I had the chance to explore Austria, Germany, and Slovakia — and it was an amazing experience. Since I’m based in Cape Town (summer right now) and grew up in sunny California, I wasn’t sure what outerwear to bring for my first European winter. Here’s everything I learned about packing for cold weather in Europe.

My European Winter Packing List After Three Weeks of Travel

  • (3) Heavy Coats: I packed three heavy coats: a white oversized fluffy one (like a marshmallow!), a camel coat for a neutral layer that goes with everything, and a red coat to add a pop of color.
  • (5) Sweaters: Five sweaters: white, cream, black, and grey for mixing under coats, plus a super soft mustard turtleneck that pairs perfectly with the camel coat.
  • (2) Long Sleeve Shirts: Two long-sleeve shirts — I wore them as base layers under sweaters on the coldest days.
  • (3) Pairs of Pants: Three pairs of pants: black fleece leggings (my go-to for cold weather — they can be layered under jeans or worn with tunics and sweater dresses), plus black jeans and light blue jeans.
  • (3) Pairs of Shoes: Three pairs of shoes: dark brown heeled booties, black over-the-knee boots to wear with leggings, and black Doc Martens. I should note that I needed double wool socks to keep my feet warm in the Docs. What I didn’t bring but wish I had: a comfortable pair of warm winter boots like these.
  • Accessories: Accessories: a black brimmed hat, ear muffs, black and cream beanies, cozy scarves, and black and brown leather gloves.
  • Swimsuit: Don’t forget a swimsuit — you’ll want at least one bikini for thermal baths or hotel spas.
  • Purse: I always bring a camera purse or messenger bag as my day bag.
