Dealing with Wi-Fi troubles on your PS4 can be incredibly annoying. When you're offline, you can't hop into a party with friends, play multiplayer games, or even download the latest game patches.
If running an Ethernet cable straight to your console isn't practical, here are a few handy solutions to try.
1. Activate Your Router's Guest Network
It may seem odd, but this method has helped many users. If you own the original PS4 model, it only supports the 2.4GHz frequency band. The newer PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro can connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
Some routers merge both bands under a single network name (SSID). If your PS4 shows a "signal too weak" error, turn on the guest network feature on your router and link your PS4 to that. You'll need to use the Web Browser app to enter the guest access code before connecting.
2. Bring Your Console Closer to the Router
If your PS4 sits far from the router, you'll likely get inconsistent performance. Relocate your console as near to the router as possible and check if the connection improves.
3. Switch Off Other Devices on Your Network
Sluggish speeds on your PS4 could stem from interference, especially when using the 2.4GHz band. Power down other gaming consoles, computers, and even appliances like microwaves. Downloading files on a PC or streaming video on a phone can also hog bandwidth and slow your PS4.
If none of these three fixes work, your best option is to invest in a pair of powerline adapters. These compact devices plug into wall outlets; you connect an Ethernet cable from each adapter to your router and your console. The network signal travels through your home's electrical wiring, giving you a stable wired connection without needing to run a long cable.
