This past summer marked the 45th anniversary of the legendary fashion house Armani, offering a perfect moment to reflect on its origins and what sets it apart from other Italian labels. Today, Armani represents far more than luxury garments that flaunt the wearer's wealth. It embodies style, practicality, modernity, and quality. The company remains under the leadership of its founder, Giorgio Armani, who believes clothing is a tool for self-expression. He invites his clients to co-create—he designs the pieces, but it's up to the individual to complete the look.
Giorgio Armani has always been driven by a persistent sense of dissatisfaction, especially with himself. He constantly pursues perfection, ensuring his collections remain timeless. Simplicity, classic lines, and a refusal to chase shock value define his approach: the Italian designer avoids fleeting, flashy novelties. Instead, he focuses on understanding society's needs and how people want to dress in everyday life.
№1 A Progressive Approach to Clothing Design
Giorgio Armani grew up in a modest Italian family where fashion was an afterthought—earning a living took priority. In his large household, they dressed simply but tastefully, largely thanks to his mother, who shaped his perception of beauty. Armani studied medicine at the University of Milan for two years, dropped out, served in the military, and then landed a job at the Rinashente department store, where his journey into fashion began. He later worked as a designer's assistant, a fabric buyer, created patterns, and sewed for several clothing brands—essentially climbing from the bottom to launch his own label.

Armani founded his fashion house in the summer of 1975 alongside his friend, architect Sergio Galeotti, who handled the financial side, allowing the designer to focus on creativity without distraction.
Armani was among the first designers to sense the demand for major changes in clothing. Evolving views on women's roles in society, feminism, and the push for gender equality led women to seek more structured, comfortable, and practical attire. The designer explained why he wanted to transform his clients' appearance.
I noticed that women often looked ridiculous, as if they were deliberately dressed like dolls. Seeing those glittering ladies overloaded with jewelry gave the impression they had no concerns or thoughts beyond the bedroom—which may not be so bad, but it doesn't reflect real life at all.Giorgio Armani
№2 A Pioneer in Everything
Armani was the first Italian designer to break onto the global stage. Today, "Made in Italy" is a mark of quality, but when Armani started his career, the world looked to France and Britain for style, so Italian designers mostly copied established silhouettes. Giorgio Armani was also one of the first Western designers to prioritize the Chinese market. The brand entered the East in the early 1990s, and in 2010 became the first luxury fashion house to open a flagship store and an e-commerce platform in Asia.
№3 Armani's First Recognition Came in the USA
Conservative Italians were initially skeptical of the designer's ideas. However, he persisted and entered the American market, where he received a warm welcome. By the late 1970s, the United States was ripe for innovation, and women readily embraced the convenience offered by the Italian brand. In 1981, Giorgio Armani appeared on the cover of Time magazine, becoming only the second designer in history to receive that honor (the first was Frenchman Christian Dior in 1957). This achievement sparked envy among other popular fashion designers. To this day, the Armani brand remains popular among office workers in the United States.

№4 Armani Set the Trend for Dressing Celebrities on the Red Carpet
Today, it's common for famous brands to dress Hollywood stars, but starting in the 1980s, celebrities primarily wore Armani outfits on the red carpet for many years. The designer had a passion for cinema and created costumes for nearly 200 feature films, including American Gigolo, Ocean's Thirteen, The Dark Knight, and Inglourious Basterds.

№5 The Brand Has Created Uniforms Multiple Times
In the late 1970s, Giorgio Armani designed uniforms for the Italian army. In the early 1990s, he created a uniform for the crew of the Italian airline Alitalia. The New York Times then noted a mismatch between the flight attendants' stylish appearance and the quality of service—their clothes were elegant, but the service was poor. In the 2010s, Giorgio Armani designed kits for the Italian Olympic team four times: in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
№6 Milan Became a Global Fashion Capital Largely Thanks to Armani
Milan had been renowned for its textile industry for centuries, but it was Giorgio Armani who put the city on the world fashion map, placing it alongside London and Paris, which had dictated trends for decades. Over time, other notable Italian brands like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, and Moschino also emerged.
№7 Armani Isn't Just About Clothes
The company has now evolved into a true empire. It all started in 1981 when Giorgio Armani democratized fashion by launching the Emporio Armani collection. The concept and design matched the brand's style, but prices were lower than the couture line. Gradually, the number of brand directions expanded. Today, Armani's assortment includes women's, men's, and children's clothing lines for work and leisure, accessories, household goods, skincare and makeup, fragrances, and even candy stores in several countries. The company is involved in hotel interiors, and Armani himself sponsors the Milan basketball team.
Giorgio Armani has always aimed to create not just spectacular but comfortable clothes that anyone can incorporate into their personal wardrobe and make part of their style.
This desire to craft an elegant image that highlights the individual's personality is the core philosophy of the Armani fashion house.
