The eagerly awaited new season of American Crime Story is just weeks away from its premiere, but FX has released a new video that takes fans behind the curtain, exploring the production process and explaining why the show chose to delve into the murder of Gianni Versace this time around.
In the clip, actor Edgar Ramirez, portraying Gianni Versace, highlights that the series won't solely zero in on the investigation itself but will also examine the missteps that occurred. “We’re going to understand how that could’ve been avoided,” he remarked.

Darren Criss, who takes on the role of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, adds, “this particular manhunt is the largest failed FBI manhunt in history.” The new trailer also showcases previously unseen footage from the series, including scenes featuring Orange is the New Black star Dascha Polanco as Detective Lori Wieder, who is on the hunt for Cunanan.
Ricky Martin, playing Versace’s partner Antonio D’Amico, observes that the connection between Cunanan’s killings continues to baffle people today. “People were scared. The fact that this man was killing gay men,” he said. “Still, some people don’t understand why it happened.”
As reported earlier, the series will explore why these murders persisted even after the FBI had identified Cunanan as a suspect, focusing on the homophobia that influenced the investigation at the time. “Andrew’s journey is a journey through the politics of homosexuality as they play out across America in the 1990s,” executive producer Brad Simpson stated in the video.

The trailer also features fresh scenes, including FBI agents attempting to locate Cunanan and more of Criss’s performance, such as the first encounter between Cunanan and Versace. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t include new clips of Penelope Cruz as Versace’s sister, Donatella, but it certainly looks like it will be worth the anticipation.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres January 17 on FX.
