Inside M2Malletier’s Striking Brutalist Studio: The Birthplace of Barcelona’s Coveted Handbags

Explore how M2Malletier’s founders fuse artistry and industry in a converted pre-WWI cement factory, crafting iconic handbags with medieval-inspired hardware.

Inside M2Malletier’s Striking Brutalist Studio: The Birthplace of Barcelona’s Coveted Handbags

The commercial reality of fashion is often minimized. Most apparel and accessory designers prefer to highlight the creative side—the ideas, craftsmanship, and presentation of their products. That approach makes sense and is compelling, yet a huge part of the business revolves around precise measurements, cutting, skilled labor, production floors, machinery, and logistics—less glamorous but undeniably crucial.

Both art and commerce are vividly present in the 1,000-square-foot workspace of design sensations Marcela Velez and Melissa Losada, the duo behind M2Malletier. They launched their celebrated, highly desirable line of undeniably alluring handbags in Barcelona, establishing themselves inside a pre-World War I cement factory transformed by renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Known as La Fábrica, this structure resembles a brutalist Gothic fortress—in short, it’s like nothing you’ve encountered before.

“Melissa is currently in London while I work from our Barcelona office, but we’re in constant communication,” Velez shared during our conversation. “I handle the business operations, and Melissa oversees all design aspects.” Originally from Colombia, the two met at a party while studying at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Their shared Colombian roots and passion for sleek luggage construction, historical references, and architectural forms drew them together, inspiring the launch of their handbag line in 2012. “M2Malletier blends architectural influences with historical ones,” Velez explained. “The brand honors iconic, trailblazing women, like Vicomtesse Marie-Laure de Noailles, one of the 20th century’s most daring and influential art patrons.”

M2Malletier bags are instantly recognizable thanks to their graceful metal handle, which the designers refer to as ‘the needle.’ “We aimed for something distinctive, something that would set us apart,” Velez noted. This striking feature has earned the devotion of fashion enthusiasts, who carry the elegant bag with its gilded grip both day and night. The signature hardware drew inspiration from medieval armor and antique medical instruments. “Medieval medical tools served as our inspiration,” Velez remarked.

“This handle has become a signature of M2Malletier, perfectly capturing the brand’s timeless allure and avant-garde spontaneity.”

Choosing La Fábrica as their studio was a natural decision for Losada and Velez; Bofill is Losada’s father-in-law, and they consider him a key influence. “Our brand ethos reflects the work of French interior designer Jean-Michel Frank and Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill,” Velez said. For the designers, these figures exemplify the fusion of minimalism and surrealism, resolving the artistic tension between old and new worlds.

“Our section of La Fábrica is compact—less than 1,000 square feet, including the airy attached pied-à-terre with a bedroom overlooking the olive garden,” Velez described. “It has its own Rapunzel-like charm. Flowing floor-to-ceiling ivory curtains create an ethereal contrast with the classic arches, and there are bursts of unexpected color.” La Fábrica also houses Bofill’s office and residence.

“The vibe and eclectic energy this space gives off inspire us to create and design new collections each season to keep our customers happy,” she added, “while always staying true to our brand identity.”

Beyond La Fábrica, here are some of Marcela Velez’s preferred Barcelona destinations:

To eat: Parco Sushi, Martinez, Gallito and Frankie Gallo Cha Cha Cha To relax: The coastal town of Sitges and SOFIA Hotel and Spa Barcelona
