The newest preview for Fifty Shades Freed—the concluding chapter in what may be the most contractually bound film trilogy ever—serves up all the familiar elements. It even features Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” on the soundtrack, but the trailer also efficiently recaps the earlier movies, Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. Once again, Christian Grey makes a demanding request, Anastasia Steele hesitates at first, then gives in… and just like that, you’re up to speed.
Fifty Shades Darker shows Christian and Ana happily married, enjoying their ideal domestic life with vacations, more vacations, and an outrageously high water bill (those steamy showers aren’t cheap, after all). Everything seems perfect until Ana’s unstable former boss, Jack, reappears. Oh, and there’s another twist: she’s pregnant. Wait, what? The trailer hilariously drops this baby bombshell in its final seconds; even Dakota Johnson appears taken aback by the news.
FIFTY SHADES
The finest Twilight movie (trust me, this connects) is the last one, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, thanks to its battle sequence. Nothing in Fifty Shades Freed could match that level of absurdity, but I’d stay for a post-credits scene where Christian and Ana’s child turns 18 and learns his nursery was once Christian’s “Red Room of Pain.” That ending would be… unconventional.
Fifty Shades Freed hits theaters on February 9.
