The Newport on Sydney's Northern Beaches has undergone a remarkable transformation, and I've been back several times since its relaunch. This venue redefines the traditional pub concept with playful pink accents, cactus-filled gardens, a retro gym, and abundant marble. It's unconventional yet tastefully restrained—a delicate balance.
The iconic venue first reopened under Merivale's management in March 2016, but that was just the beginning. Now the second phase has arrived: the eagerly awaited bar and brasserie, Bert's, on the first floor. Inspired by the grand hotel dining rooms of the 1930s, the atmosphere is laid-back yet distinctly Northern Beaches. The design was a family affair, with owner Justin Hemmes, his sister Bettina Hemmes, Akin Creative's Kelvin Ho, and stylist Amanda Talbot all contributing. The name Bert's comes from Bettina's school nickname.
The menu is Mediterranean-inspired, with charcoal ovens and Basque grills taking centre stage in an open kitchen. Executive Chef Jordan Toft explains: 'We aimed to evoke the relaxed indulgence of a coastal European getaway—the moment you choose fresh lobster or settle in for an afternoon of champagne and oysters. It feels special but entirely effortless.'
The wine list boasts 750 selections, featuring classic Australian and European bottles, quirky emerging labels, and an extensive rosé collection. Guests can enjoy their drinks in the restaurant or at Bert's sophisticated yet casual bar—a venue inspired by American country clubs and worth a visit on its own.
Merivale is also set to open The Collaroy, another Northern Beaches pub, in late summer. Keep an eye out!
