Surprising Facts About Marilyn Monroe You Probably Didn't Know

Explore lesser-known details about the iconic Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, from her high IQ and hidden talents to her kindness and personal struggles.

Surprising Facts About Marilyn Monroe You Probably Didn't Know

Some facts that you might not know about Hollywood Diva of all times Marilyn Monroe:

  • Despite being frequently cast as the stereotypical "dumb blonde"—a role she despised—Monroe was highly intelligent, boasting an IQ of 168.
  • Though she immortalized the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," Monroe herself had little interest in costly gems. Her jewelry collection consisted almost entirely of costume pieces, with the only exceptions being a diamond ring and a pearl necklace gifted by her second husband, Joe DiMaggio.
  • According to reports, her agent Johnny Hyde persuaded her to undergo two cosmetic procedures: a rhinoplasty to reshape the cartilage at the tip of her nose and a chin implant.
  • Monroe was among the earliest female stars to establish her own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. However, the company produced just a single film, The Prince and the Showgirl (1957).
  • She was a remarkably skilled cook.
  • Monroe played a pivotal role in Ella Fitzgerald's career by personally contacting the owner of the Mocambo, a famed Hollywood nightclub, to secure a booking for Fitzgerald. The club had initially refused to hire Fitzgerald because of her race. Fitzgerald later recalled that Monroe personally called the owner, promising to sit at a front table every night if Fitzgerald was booked. The owner agreed, and Monroe kept her word, drawing massive press attention. After that, Fitzgerald's career never looked back, as she no longer had to play small jazz clubs. Fitzgerald described Monroe as an unusual woman ahead of her time.
  • While married to playwright Arthur Miller, Monroe desperately wished to become a mother and attempted to conceive. Tragically, she experienced both an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage.
  • Monroe asked Joe DiMaggio to promise that if she predeceased him, he would place flowers on her grave weekly. DiMaggio honored that vow, arranging for half a dozen red roses to be delivered to her crypt three times a week for two decades.
