Grace Bonney
This past week brought overwhelming sorrow and despair, making it challenging to focus on topics like design and art. While this site often serves as a lighthearted escape, I'm finding it difficult to move past the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, and the broader sense of lost hope. Yet I'm committed to pressing on, supporting those in need, and seeking small pockets of beauty and optimism. For me, the highlight was the unveiling of the Obamas' presidential portraits. Painted by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, these two distinct works have sparked considerable conversation. I have my own opinions, but I believe listening to critiques from Black art experts is more valuable than my personal take. So I'm sharing both portraits here to close the week with something vibrant and meaningful, connected to rich artistic traditions (Michelle Obama's gown references Gee's Bend quilting). Wishing everyone a safe and joyful weekend. Love, Grace.
