As temperatures drop, layering up with cozy clothing becomes essential. Thick materials like angora, cashmere, and wool offer extra insulation, helping to retain warmth. While wool is undeniably beautiful and warm, caring for it can be tricky, and many assume that dry cleaning is the only solution. That's not true.
Here are four straightforward DIY tricks to maintain your woolen items in top condition:
Simple Home Tricks for Wool Care
Tip No. 1
For delicate garments such as wool, silk, chiffon, or organza, always put them on last and take them off first. For instance, apply your perfume and get dressed before adding any jewelry. In the evening, remove jewelry first, then undress. Jewelry can snag fabric, while perfumes and deodorants may cause stains or discoloration.
Tip No. 2
Always check the care label before washing or drying. Washing wool in cold water is preferable to dry cleaning, and be sure to keep it separate from other fabrics. Heat is harmful to wool and can cause shrinking.
Tip No. 3
Turn your garment inside out before washing to prevent damage. Add a pinch of salt to the water to stop colors from running. I suggest using your bathroom sink (ideal for one item), adding 3–5 drops of a mild detergent made specifically for wool, and letting the piece soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
Tip No. 4
Avoid wringing out wool clothing when rinsing. Instead, roll the sweater into a ball and gently press to remove water. Discard the water, refill with clean water, and rinse to remove any leftover detergent. Repeat these steps if necessary. Note: Too much water can damage these fabrics.
