Want a Stronger Marriage? Try Taking the Lead in Intimacy

by Jessica Williams

In a marriage or long-term relationship, it’s frequently the man who takes the lead when it comes to initiating sex. This doesn’t mean women lack desire—they certainly do. However, between managing daily life, raising children, and handling work responsibilities, they often don’t feel in the mood.

Alternatively, some women feel awkward about making the first move (a topic worth exploring separately). Over time, failing to initiate sex can significantly impact your relationship.

Your husband may start to feel ignored, rejected, or undesirable. In fact, surveys show that many men feel genuinely happy and appreciated when their wife takes the initiative in intimacy. It gives them a sense of being loved and desired.

Beyond lacking desire or feeling uneasy about initiating, other reasons a woman might hold back include:

  • Waiting until she regains her pre-pregnancy figure
  • Waiting to feel attractive again
  • Waiting until she’s less exhausted
  • Or, waiting for life to calm down

If this sounds familiar, remember that you must actively work on these issues to rebuild your confidence. Also, keep in mind that you don’t need to wait for everything to be “perfect” before you start initiating sex.

Make a conscious effort to be the one to make the first move. You might find your relationship feels surprisingly revitalized afterward—not only will your partner appreciate it, but you’ll also gain a sense of empowerment.
