A close friend is about to start a long-term program where she'll master skills like farming, baking bread, crafting cheese, and making candles by hand. It's almost hard to picture such a lifestyle still existing today, isn't it? For me, the idea of living from the land and building habits around the seasons brings to mind scenes from history and stirs a gentle, almost yearning nostalgia for a way of life most of us have never experienced.
In essence, it sounds like making real that dreamy "simple life" we all imagine—free from the pressure of constant emails, meetings, workouts, and social commitments.
But as tempting as that sounds, I also ask myself if and how the simple life can show up outside the farm and in our own daily routines. Do we only let it live in our fantasies, as something from the past? Or can we lead a full, successful, and simple life without leaving our careers or household duties behind?
I'll admit I often struggle with overscheduling and running at full speed like anyone else, but I've discovered several practical tips we can all adopt to live simpler, more meaningful lives no matter what we're managing.

1. Reconnect with your food.
We all need to eat, right? But how often do we trade wholesome home-cooked meals for a quick protein bar or snack on the run? Food is meant to fuel and support our bodies, but it should also offer deeper nourishment and connection.
It would be ideal if we always had time to cook from scratch, but even if we just cut back on processed foods and choose fresh, healthy options when we can, pause to appreciate where our food comes from, or pay more attention to each ingredient in our meals, we would slow down and enjoy our food more, while being more present in this part of our lives.
2. Walk whenever possible.
Whether we live in a busy city or a quiet suburb, most of us spend a lot of time in the car. It may not be realistic to walk to work or the store depending on distance, but if we can park a bit farther from the shop, take an evening stroll around the neighborhood, or enjoy a brisk morning walk to the nearest café, those extra steps are well worth it.
Besides boosting mood and improving heart health, walking lets our senses roam and frees the mind to enjoy slow, thoughtful reflections on life—which keep us grounded in our purpose and true to our passions.
3. Create space for silence.
Even in those rare quiet moments, most of our minds refuse to calm down because we're so used to doing, working, and planning all the time. But taking time alone now and then—once the kids are asleep or while we sip our coffee—offers a much-needed chance to rest and reflect, allowing us to hear our inner voice and strengthen our intentions.

With all the technology at our fingertips, we can pack more into our lives than ever before; there's almost a collective obsession with being as productive as possible. But at what cost? A Zen proverb says, "When eating, eat. When walking, walk." It sounds simple and obvious, but sometimes we need that reminder to bring mindful awareness to whatever we're doing—whether catching up with a friend, doing laundry, or washing dishes.
In short, living a simple life doesn't mean giving up internet, moving to a smaller house, or eliminating all clutter. Instead, it's about finding freedom from the unnecessary noise and distractions that often keep us in "survival mode." It's what helps us focus on what matters—connecting with the people and practices that bring meaning and value to our lives.
