Wholesome Baked Chocolate Donuts: A Better Treat for Children

Whip up decadent chocolate donuts from scratch in your kitchen! These baked treats skip the deep fryer and pack in a wholesome twist for a smarter indulgence.

Craving a soft, cake-style chocolate donut? Crafted in your own oven? Free from heavily processed frying fats and overloaded with far less sugar? (It really is true — the perks just keep stacking up.)

When we whip up sweets like these donuts in our own kitchen, we savor brighter, fresher flavors along with superior nutrition — a priority whenever we feed our children!

These decadent chocolate donuts deliver a satisfying sweetness and richness, crowned with a velvety glaze built from just two straightforward ingredients. Reach for them whenever you want a lighter dessert option.

Why Are These Donuts a Smarter Choice?

Commercially produced donuts fall short nutritionally in several significant respects. To begin, they pack in enormous amounts of sugar. Additionally, their macronutrient breakdown tilts heavily toward simple carbs and refined fats.

Our delicious homemade donuts reclaim both of those nutritional losses. We aimed to sweeten them naturally, so we reached for honey; you won't spot a single trace of refined sugar in the batter. (Granted, the glaze does feature dark chocolate chips, and yes, those have sugar. We're only human.)

We also folded in chocolate protein powder and slashed the oil content significantly to create a more balanced macronutrient profile. A better mix of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins helps little ones — and us — feel full for longer periods and sidestep dramatic blood sugar swings. (Recall how your children behave mid sugar-crash? That alone should spark plenty of motivation.)

Even though these donuts still qualify firmly as a treat, they offer a more wholesome swap for store-bought varieties that kids adore. Grab one and dig in!

Steps for Baking Donuts at Home

To achieve that classic donut shape, you'll naturally need to begin with a donut pan. We favor silicone versions since the donuts slip out effortlessly. You can grab an adorable set of silicone donut pans here.

Combine the batter using the same approach you'd take with cake: whisk dry components in one bowl, wet components in a separate bowl, then gently combine the two. As you spoon the mixture into the cavities, fill each one only two-thirds of the way to leave room for expansion while baking.

A few pointers for glazing: once the donuts emerge from the oven, allow them to cool entirely before applying the glaze. Afterward, refrigerate them briefly so the glaze firms up, but don't leave them too long. Pull them back out and enjoy them once they've returned to room temperature.
