A 4-Step Guide to Eyelash Care: Why It Matters and How to Do It

Your eyelashes deserve the same care as your skin and hair. Learn why lash health matters and how to maintain them in four simple steps.

A 4-Step Guide to Eyelash Care: Why It Matters and How to Do It

Your lashes are an integral part of your appearance—treat them with the same dedication you give your skin and hair.

Let me ask you this: When aiming for thick, elongated lashes, what's the most coats of mascara you've ever piled on in one day? (I've hit five, but who's keeping track…)

We curl and stack (and stack) mascara hoping to achieve a bright, alert look, but this heavy focus can result in lashes that are brittle, clumpy, or even patchy—in short, unhealthy. The irony is that while eyelashes attract endless product chatter, nobody actually discusses proper lash maintenance. Lashes are a key feature of our face, so they warrant the same level of attention we reserve for our complexion and hair. Moreover, the better you care for them, the less reliant you'll be on all those gadgets and formulas that promise to make them look healthier, thicker, fuller, and longer—you know the drill.

How do you incorporate lashes into your regular beauty regimen? Start by recognizing what they truly are: hair. Yes, each lash is a strand that grows along the eyelid's edge, acting as a shield against irritants like dust, perspiration, and moisture. In essence, lashes are the primary defense for your delicate eyeballs, so they deserve gentle handling (not five layers of mascara!). Your upper lid holds more lashes than the lower one—roughly 300 versus 100—and the central lashes tend to be longer than those at the corners. They naturally shed on a regular cycle; a healthy lash lives only about three months, and at any moment, 90% of your lashes are in an active growth phase.

Given that nearly all your lashes are growing and developing almost constantly, doesn't it make sense to tend to them regularly rather than only occasionally when you happen to remember? Absolutely. Although there's no single miracle solution for perfect lashes, a bit of conscious effort (plus a few products) can make a significant difference.

Lash Care Step 1: Pick the Right Mascara.

For goodness' sake, avoid waterproof mascara whenever you can. If you anticipate crying all day, swimming, or getting splashed with water, then grab a waterproof formula. But for daily use, steer clear of long-wear options. The ingredients in waterproof mascaras are extremely drying—imagine how your hair would feel if you blow-dried it daily, flat-ironed it, and never conditioned it—and their stubbornness makes removal nearly impossible without accidentally pulling out several lashes.

Instead, choose an everyday mascara formulated with natural components such as mineral pigments to avoid eye irritation, and moisturizing, nourishing elements like oils, butters, and waxes that condition lashes (and help prevent those dreaded clumps!).

Also consider the applicator brush: one that is flexible and equipped with dense bristles allows you to coat all lashes with just one or two swipes, reducing the need for multiple layers.

Lash Care Step 2: Remove Mascara Every. Single. Day.

Do I really need to remind you to take off your makeup each night? But seriously, do it. For the health of your skin and your lashes, REMOVE! THAT! MAKEUP! (Think Oprah!) Remember, lashes are made of hair. Picture using hairspray and dry shampoo without ever washing your hair—not good, right? Let your lashes breathe. Plus, caked-on, old mascara is simply unhygienic. If it seeps into the follicle at the lash base, that's practically a direct route to a stye.

Lash Care Step 3: Cleanse Gently.

Convinced? Excellent. Now that you've committed to a daily lash cleaning, you need to choose your method. My preferred technique is to use the same oil cleanser or balm I apply to the rest of my face for removing makeup and grime. I find the oil-dissolves-oil principle works perfectly here, leaving my lashes clean without irritating my eyes or skin.

If you're dealing with especially stubborn mascara or delicate lashes, a cream cleanser might be a better option. Cream cleansers are extremely gentle on lashes (while still effectively cleaning them) because they minimize tugging during mascara removal. With oil cleansers and balms, the rubbing motion across your face and around your eyes is what lifts the makeup—meaning you sweep your fingers over your lashes at least four or five times, plus a follow-up second cleanse. With a cream cleanser, a splash of water and one or two passes are sufficient, as long as you then use a damp cotton ball to wipe away everything. Of course, you can also purchase dedicated eye makeup removers if you have room on your bathroom shelf!

As long as you remove your mascara every night without losing lashes, I say go with what works for you! Find your cleansing bliss.

Lash Care Step 4: Condition Those Lashes.

Alright, so you're using the correct amount of the right mascara. You're gently removing it each night with the appropriate product. That's it, right? Not quite. To truly treat your lashes with importance, consider conditioning them similarly to how you diligently apply mists, serums, oils, and moisturizers to your face before bed. Remember: eyelashes are hair, and hair needs conditioning to stay healthy, long, and strong. Also like hair, you should focus the conditioning product on the ends to prevent your scalp or eyelids from becoming greasy and overloaded.

Two simple and virtually cost-free methods (chances are you have them at home) for post-cleansing lash care are plain coconut oil or
