The mounting emotional and physical strain had begun to wear me down, and I genuinely wasn't sure how much longer I could endure. By the month's close, both my husband and my mother had returned home and were healing nicely from their operations, while my father had nearly restored his full range of movement. Then on New Year's Eve, word came that my grandfather had died. I drove to his home, took his hand, whispered my farewell, and at last broke down sobbing over everything that had unfolded across such a compressed stretch of time.
Coming back home that night, I was chilled to the bone, utterly drained, and barely recognized myself. My husband wrapped his arms around me while I cried and asked what would help. The single idea that came to mind — the only thing I believed might offer any relief — was drawing a hot bath.
And in that instant, I discovered my devotion to the sacred practice of bathing.
Until that evening, I had never once been someone who took baths. Yet some instinctive nudge inside me urged me to fill that untouched tub and simply immerse myself. Sliding into the heated water and feeling it ease my frayed nerves and knotted muscles transformed everything. These days, I soak as often as my week allows. Whether the goal is unwinding or reinvigorating, bathing draws my focus fully inward, attending to my personal needs above all else. It's my method of fleeing and yielding all at once — an indulgence and a necessity wrapped into one.
Should you be looking for a path toward genuine self-care and haven't yet embraced bathing as a regular practice, I wholeheartedly encourage you to try it.
Here are my suggestions and favorite finds for getting the absolute most out of your bathing hours:
Curating a Calming Bath Ritual at Home: My Tried-and-True Method
Step No. 1
To begin, I run my bath. I prefer mine scalding, but pick whatever warmth suits you best. A generous cupful of Epsom salts always makes its way into the water to soothe my sore muscles, complemented by a small dose of Saje essential oil for a touch of aromatherapy. On occasion, I'll add a splash of an all-natural body wash — PLANT Apothecary's Be Well Eucalyptus and Bergamot is my go-to for a bit of bubbly foam. When I'm craving extra decadence, I scatter in True Moringa's Calming Bath Soak, a mixture of oil-kissed dried rose petals and chamomile. Soaking amid petals drifting on the surface makes me feel positively regal!
Step No. 2
As the water rises, I ignite my beloved Le Feu de L'eau candle. Next, I prepare a tall tumbler of chilled water and a book and arrange them within arm's reach beside the tub. At last, I'm prepared to climb in. Ohhh, that feels absolutely heavenly!
Step No. 3
Once I'm settled into the water, I reach for a Skin Owl beauty bar to lather up. The Matcha variety is outstanding and has a wonderful fragrance. Because it's free of pore-blocking oils, I work it across my complexion as well! After that, I use Meow Meow Tweet's Sweet Orange Papaya Scrub, focusing on my elbows, knees, and feet. What I adore about this scrub is that it isn't overly greasy, so it leaves no film behind. I also exfoliate my face while I'm at it. With my sensitive complexion, Amala's Hydrating Face Polish is incredibly mild and carries the most gorgeous jasmine aroma.
Whether I soak to unwind or recharge, bathing centers my attention entirely on me and what I truly need.
Step No. 4
After finishing my scrubbing routine, I smooth on a face mask — sometimes even two. Indeed, I milk every minute of my bath! I enjoy starting with a clay formula such as Asarai Earth Tones to detoxify, brighten, and pull impurities from the skin. I recline and let it perform its wonders. Once I've rinsed that away, I layer on a hydrating mask to nourish and calm. Lately I've been alternating between the January Labs Moisture Renew Mask and the Amala Rejuvenating Collagen Mask. The rising steam amplifies your mask's effects beautifully. How long you linger is entirely your call, but I typically remain until the water chills or my fingers prune up. Aim for a minimum of 20 minutes to fully harvest the rewards of your personal retreat.
Step No. 5
When it's time to emerge, I move with extra caution. Standing up too quickly can leave me woozy, since shifting abruptly from hot to cold causes a sudden dip in blood pressure. My workaround is to let the tub drain while I'm still seated inside, which gives my body a chance to adjust gradually. I gently press a towel against my skin and follow up with a moisturizer. When I'm after something deeply nourishing, I smooth on Soapwalla's Luxurious Body Oil or OSMIA's Body Mousse. It glides on like whipped air! I slip into a robe and let every inch drink in the moisture. On days when I need to dress right after, I reach for a featherweight formula that won't feel tacky under my clothing. Essentiel Moisture by Adele is a true dream and melts into the skin in seconds. Then take a moment to relish the glow of having carved out space for yourself and surrender to the calm your at-home spa has delivered.
