NIOD Re Pigment Serum Assessment with Detailed Before and After Images

Hands-on look at NIOD's Re Pigment brightening serum. Can it really fade persistent dark spots and uneven tone?

Uneven skin tone is frustrating, plain and simple. Stubborn dark marks that crop up uninvited and refuse to budge. Nobody signs up for that. They show up out of nowhere and cling on for dear life.

Deciem is a company that enjoys a tremendous amount of credibility with me. I've covered them extensively, and I also help manage two discussion groups on the topic. When NIOD — the most research-driven label within the Deciem family — rolled out something aimed at tackling discoloration, I was immediately intrigued. (If pigmentation is your thing too, have a look at my earlier pieces — The Ordinary Cheatsheet, Difference Between the Deciem Brands). I already incorporate several actives that claim to address melasma and uneven tone. With results so far falling short, I was eager to put Re Pigment through its paces.

Re Pigment is a fresh launch from NIOD, built to confront discoloration through multiple mechanisms. I've put it to the test at length, and there are plenty of detailed close-up shots included. Here's the rundown on Re Pigment-

NIOD Re Pigment Serum Assessment with Detailed Before and After Images

Why Discoloration Develops

At its core, hyperpigmentation stems from melanin accumulating where it shouldn't. Melanin production kicks off through a chain of reactions triggered by genetics, hormonal shifts, inflammation, or UV exposure. The melanocytes receive a cue, convert L-Tyrosine into melanin, and that pigment gets shuttled to the surface skin cells.

Sun exposure plays a major role. If you're attempting to clear up any discoloration, sunscreen needs to be priority number one. There's little sense in working hard to improve your skin while simultaneously undoing that progress. Take a look at my dedicated sunscreen guide for recommendations.

Re Pigment from NIOD by Deciem- The Science Behind It.

I dug through the research for each of the key actives. Quite a few are novel and experimental, so the body of clinical literature is still thin. That's the hallmark of NIOD — they're operating at the bleeding edge of skincare science. The actives are positioned high up on the ingredient declaration, which is always a positive indicator.

Diglucosyl Gallic Acid– Also referred to as Brightenyl or THGB. Once on the skin, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid gets converted by the skin's microbiome into THGA. Both THGB and THGA have demonstrated the ability to fade existing UV-induced marks, ward off new sun spots, and enhance overall radiance. The findings are encouraging, with the ingredient outperforming established brighteners such as Kojic acid in controlled tests. – Study on the efficacy of Brightenyl

Acetyl Glycyl Beta Alanine- Known as Genowhite- Works by blocking the enzymes responsible for melanin synthesis and disrupting the transfer of pigment to the upper layers of the epidermis. Study on efficacy of Genowhite

Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate– Marketed as Azeloyl Glycine, it's synthesized by combining Azelaic Acid with Glycine. Azelaic Acid has long been valued for tackling acne and evening out tone, and this derivative retains those perks while offering extras. Azeloyl Glycine dissolves more readily in water, delivers stronger brightening power, and shows greater sebum-regulating and calming effects. I couldn't track down dedicated clinical trials, but based on the profile, I'm keen to try it on my own skin.

Encapsulated Oligopeptide-68– Sold under the name Beta White, it functions by suppressing the MITF gene's role in triggering melanin output within melanocytes. More information

Solubilised Tetrapeptide-30– A lipid-friendly peptide that interrupts the communication between keratinocytes and melanocytes, preventing the signal that drives pigment creation. Research has documented noticeable brightening outcomes after six weeks of consistent application. Read the studies

Red Evodia Fruit Derivatives– Sourced from traditional Chinese herbal practice, recognized for its skin-brightening and soothing characteristics.

Backing these actives are moisture-rich antioxidant Microfiltered Klamath Lake Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae along with the lipo-oligopeptide delivery technology.

Each active targets a distinct stage of the melanogenesis pathway. By layering these approaches, Re Pigment provides a comprehensive strategy, attacking discoloration from every direction.

Re Pigment from NIOD by Deciem Assessment

Re Pigment arrives in Deciem's signature dropper-style container. This format has drawn some criticism since it lets air inside. Brandon Truaxe (the man behind Deciem) has a solid rationale for sticking with it. I find the dropper aesthetically pleasing, though I suspect the formula won't stay fresh as long as it would in a pump dispenser.

NIOD Re Pigment Serum Assessment

Fortunately, the 15 mls I purchased ran out before freshness became an issue. The consistency resembles a lightweight oil. There's a noticeable tingle upon application — a reassuring level of tingle, actually. It feels like it's actively working. Some users have reported more intense stinging, but my experience was milder.

For the duration of this trial, I focused exclusively on my right cheek, where pigmentation is more pronounced, which stretched the 15 mls further than treating my entire face would have. I've been using it for roughly four months, and the bottle is almost empty. If you were applying it across your full face, 15 mls would likely run out in around two months.

My current routine looks like this-

AM- cleanse, SDSM, Re Pigment, Azelaic Acid, Moisturize, SPF 50

PM- double cleanse, SDSM, Re Pigment, Granactive Retinoid 5%, Moisturizer

Given the premium price tag, I was hoping for quicker improvements. I have some scattered discoloration that makeup easily masks. But there are also a few notably dark patches I'd love to see gone. They developed after a blemish I picked up during pregnancy. They could be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma — hard to tell.

Before examining these photos, I wasn't fully sold that Re Pigment had delivered meaningful change. The patchy, freckle-like marks and spots remain visible but are fragmenting and appearing softer. Here's my baseline shot from September-

Here's a comparison shot from the start through the end of the experiment-

The largest freckle is visibly less prominent in the later image. The broader freckled pattern also appears softer.

Re Pigment from NIOD by Deciem- Was It Effective?

Yes! The images speak for themselves — there was visible progress. I was admittedly deflated since I hadn't observed rapid or striking brightening. Even without a dramatic overnight transformation, comparing month to month reveals a clear shift.

Re Pigment tackles one of the most challenging complexion concerns. Discoloration is incredibly persistent. Addressing it demands patience and investment. I'd be curious to track Re Pigment's performance over a full year (if the price point weren't so steep).

I hope the before and after photos alongside my Re Pigment review prove useful if you're considering a purchase. Additional details can be found at Deciem.com
