Citrus Peels and Plastic Bottles: Creative Self-Protection Tactics Against Coronavirus in China

In China, the anxiety driven by the rapid spread of the coronavirus is approaching its highest point. The dangerous pathogen has now been identified across every region of the People's Republic. Some locals have little faith in the effectiveness of standard surgical masks—or simply cannot obtain enough of them—so they are devising their own protective gear. These range from orange rinds to plastic containers placed over the head. Images circulating on social media depict people shielding themselves from the virus in remarkably unconventional ways.

Citizens in China are crafting makeshift face coverings using halved oranges, grapefruits, and ordinary string. It is possible that some individuals believe citrus fruits can form a barrier that prevents the virus from entering the respiratory system. Others turn to this approach simply because medical masks are unavailable due to overwhelming demand.

Additionally, residents are placing empty five-liter water bottles on their heads as a shield against coronavirus infection. Such individuals can be spotted in subway stations, stores, on the streets, and at airports. Entire families are donning these plastic helmets, and children are also outfitted with them.

Some people are even constructing their own gas masks using metal foil or the same plastic bottles. Others substitute an ice cream container for a standard mask.

A few individuals are employing actual gas masks. Furthermore, a photograph of a family surfaced on social networks, showing them using plastic bags as protection. The panic among China's population is understandable: each day brings a rising count of those infected and deceased from the coronavirus.

Although these images may provoke a smile or even laughter, that amusement quickly fades when one realizes they are not the product of photo editing but a stark reality.

Let us hope the epidemic concludes soon, allowing people in affected countries to resume their normal daily routines without fear.
