Michaël Massart, a photographer hailing from Belgium, began pursuing his craft more earnestly in 2008, following a knee injury that ended his athletic pursuits. Seeking a new outlet, he found photography—a passion that soon became central to his life and a powerful means of creative expression. One of his most recent works is a photo series featuring the iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader performing everyday jobs. This project, titled “The Empire against the Crisis,” imagines what might occur if Darth Vader were hit by the same financial collapse that brought down the Galactic Empire. Massart stages the Empire's bankruptcy and narrates the story from that turning point, simultaneously reflecting the harsh realities many of us face—where circumstances leave no choice but to take whatever work comes along. In this dire situation, Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers are compelled to wash dishes, clean cars, deliver parcels, maintain restrooms, and drive buses.
