The concept was straightforward: invite friends over for an evening meal. The decor followed suit—picnic-style tables with no assigned seats or formal place settings. Everything felt wonderfully laid-back. Elegant ivy topiaries, white kalanchoe in pots, and simple cut Queen Anne’s Lace arranged in mason jars ran down the center of the tables. The menu was equally uncomplicated: a taco catering team that prepared fresh tortillas on the spot, accompanied by a variety of tacos.
Yet this gathering marked a new chapter for me. For once, I completed several tasks ahead of time and even had them photographed to share with you. I pulled out tables and nearly finished setting them up the day before. My party decor decisions were finalized a full 24 hours in advance… unbelievable, right? I know—completely out of character for me!

Once the party kicked off, we served fresh margaritas and plenty of chilled rosé. Everything unfolded just as I had envisioned. Guests chatted, laughed, ate, and drank. When cupcakes and strawberry skewers made their appearance at the end, everyone was thrilled. The celebration stretched all the way until 1:30 a.m.!
So what’s the takeaway here? Throwing a simple end-of-summer party doesn’t require much effort. If you’ve already made plans for Labor Day weekend, fantastic—you’re likely all set. But if you’ve been mulling over a “goodbye to summer” get-together and haven’t acted yet, go for it. Invite a few friends, keep the menu ultra-simple. Create a space with a few easy touches, like potted flowering plants to brighten things up, and you’ll be all set.
